Drama Club to present 3-act comedy March 2,4 Lions Club makes flag presentation Queen Mildred Padberg and King Carl McDaniel By JUSTINE WFATHERFORD On Valentine's Day after noon, the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization in Heppner invited all over 40-year-olds to a party at the Elks Lodge. About 30 attended and enjoyed visiting, dancing to recorded music and partaking of spec ial refreshments. Alberta Johannes is presi dent of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and Mildred Breeding and Wilma Mabe were leading members of the party com mittee. Mrs. Breeding made a cake for the occasion and also created door prizes which were given out to lucky winners. A Queen and King of Hearts were selected the oldest woman and man present were named the rulers. Mildred Padberg became queen and Carl McDaniel was crowned king. They drew the numbers for the doorprize winners. Representatives of the V.F.W. say this party was a first Valentine event, and that they are discussing whether or not they will make these parties an annual affair be cause this party did not draw a big attendance. This season's first stage production of the H.H.S. Drama Club will be the three-act comedy "The Great Big Doorstep." The play will be held in the school cafetor ium at 8 p.m. March 2 and 4. The scene is in the 1930's on the mud flats of the Mississip pi River in Louisiana where a large Ca.jun family is strug gling to stay alive. The hard-working mother, Mrs. Crochet, (played by Polly Fortenberry ) washes, irons, hopes and prays she can keep the family together. Father "Commodore" Crochet (Ter ry Gray) works as little as possible, flies into rages, but also hopes for better days. The whole Crochet family hopes they can get a house to go with some elegant doorsteps which the sixteen-year-old son Ar thur (Danny Fortenberry) found floating in the river and placed at the entrance to their miserable shack. Two pretty teenage daughters. Topal and, Evvie (Karen Kenny and Marti Baker), have two inte resting boyfriends: a tall Texan (Earl Hammond) and a cocky Ca.jun barber (Lee Rice.) The family's hopes hang mostly on Uncle Dewey (Jim Ackley) a riverboat pilot who blows in with gifts, food and a check. Running in and out are the young twins. Fleece and Elna (Cindy Stroe ber and Carrie Brownfield). T.J. the baby (a doll), the landlady (Cindi Bergstrom) and a florist from New Orleans (Patti Devine) who finally saves the day. The stage crew includes Cindi Berestronv as staee manager. Mark Launer as musician and other sound effects. Larry Cerullo on lights, and I,ee Rice. Glenn Smith and Larry Cerullo on stage scenery. Director is Jane Rawlins. Tickets will be one dollar for students. SI.SO for adults and two dollars for reserved seats, which can be purchased at Murray's Drug or the school office, said a spokesperson. I.U.C.C. prepares events for season of Lent jj. W G fv ' v W 1 it- The lone United Church of Christ is preparing a variety of events for the season of Lent. Plans include all-church gatherings, a study group, and private meditation resources, said the Rev. Cathy Barker. February 23 the Worship Committee will host a Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner at 6:30 p.m. to be followed by a short worship service. Lent begins the next day. Ash Wednesday, with a Prayer Vigil from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. A study group on "Death and Dying" will begin on February 23 and 25. To accommodate the maximum number of participants, two schedules are offered: Tues day mornings 9:30-11:00 a.m. and Thursday evenings 7:30 9:(Hip.m. The group, led by the Rev. Barker, will met1 1 for six sessions through the season of Lent. Anyone is welcome to attend. Daily meditation booklets entitled "The Fellowship of Prayer" are available at the church for personal use during the Lenten season. Plans are underway for special worship services on Palm Sunday.
