EIGHT The Heppner Gaiette-Tlmes, Heppner. Oregon, Thursday, February 4, 1982 Kiverside High school announces honor roll Around About By Juntine Weatherford Because so many people find so many things to do on Saturdays it is difficult to gather many folks for any worthwhile program during that day. Last Saturday, AAUW and the Rolling Hills Runners presented an interesting and helpful program at Heppner High School to disappointingly few persons. (Remember February is Heart Month o be good to your own heart and send valentines to others you love.) Much time and effort had gone into preparations for last Saturday's workshop. The principal speaker, Len Tritsch, was excellent. The feature film stressed that how we live, determines how we die. A good collection of healthful snacks was offered, and those who did give a good part of their Saturday to attend were favorably impressed. I'm pleased with the handout material, especially the two booklets: one dealing with the common problem of stress and the second about the health of children whom are labeled the only commodity mass-produced by unskilled labor. On Sunday about five times as many folks got to the Willows Grange Hall at lone to congratulate Ida Hale Grabill at the lovely 100th birthday party arranged by her family and friends. A good collection of pictures along an entrance-way wall showed some of Ida's life and her family as it grew." When I spoke briefly to Ida I was thinking that she certainly is a fine lady who must understand how to live healthfully. My husband Bill was proud to be related to her. Besides the many neighbors and friends there, Ida's five childrens' families were everywhere her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grands are a fine-looking collection of Americans. As we have all heard and read about President Roosevelt during this week it is interesting to note that Ida Grabill, who was born in the same year and month as FDR, has already outlived him by 37 years. (He was the first president, I as a new voter, helped elect, and my staunch Republican parents didn't understand my rebellious voting.) Ida Grabill surely has been blessed with more health than President Roosevelt knew. Perhaps spending a lifetime in lone has something to do with her longevity. If you or members of your family have lived or now live in Gilliam County, you would surely, enjoy the new book "History of Gilliam County" which is being distributed now. It has 320 slick pages of pictures and narratives covering the county history, the history of families there, tributes and memorials, churches, lodges and organizations and business histories. This book was put together by the Gilliam County Historical Society members who spent many months trying to persuade folks to turn in writings about themselves and their families. As our days lengthen some thoughts are turning toward gardening which will occupy many of our free times in a month or two. Before that time we might take our families through the unusually good Morrow County Museum. Seeing the exhibits there on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon is really an educational experience. One learns much about US and local history so pleasantly and quickly. Ask the curator on duty to show you into the one-room Democrat Gulch Schoolhouse, too. This bicentennial addition to the city park is very special. I have not yet gone to look at the log cabin which Harold (Shorty) Peck has brought to the fairgrounds where it will be restored and will add such interest near the Peck collection of historic tools and various articles. People from outside Heppner come here to appreciate the museum, the schoolhouse and the Peck collections. We who live here should enjoy these unusual exhibits and learn from them. Drama Club to present comedy The Heppner High School Drama Club is rehearsing for a three act comedy. "The Great Big Doorstep." to be shown March 2 and 4 in the school cafetorium. The cast includes Polly Fortenberry, Marti Baker. Karen Kenny, Jim Ackley, Terry Gray, Lee Rice, Earl Hammond. Lovena Marlatt,, Carrie Brownfield. Cindi Bergstrom, Patti Devine, and Rick Riehl. Stage manager is Cindi Bergstrom. and scenery construction chairman is Lee Rice. "The Great Big Doorstep." a popular Broadway play in the fio's. has plenty of both humor and pathos to entertain a wide audience." said the director Jane Rawlins, "and Drama Club is asking you to mark (your) calendars now so you won't miss it."
