The American Legion drum corps program is one of the oldest. In early years nearly every post had such a team., with only legionnaires allow ed. In later years others were recruited to play. Probably they were first to include women as participants. In 1932 the national champion North Dakota corps had a beautiful drum majorette. This was a convention held in Portland. Since there was no contest rule against women, the corps was probably responsible for women being a part of both the drum and bugle corps as well as high school and college bands. Those interested in attend ing can contact any local Legion Post for information, or write to Martin Brouwer 2723 N. Willis Blvd., Portland. Oregon 97219, or phone, (503) 289-1456.
