BE LEVIED FUN0 Close to home Mary Ann G;mlIo Early Saturday morning a skiing expedition of approximately fifty teenagers and five adults curavatied their way from Heppnur over Icy mountains to Mt. Bachelor. Upon arrival, the group divided Itself according to downhill, cross-country, and skiing ability, to go their own ways. Despite the continuous pouring rain, everyone put In a full day on the slopes and topped It off on the roller skating rink that night in Rend. It was the next day that the group was rewarded for their previous soggy efforts. The sun came out, and oh what a glistening sun It was. A surge of energy went through each as the downhill skiers whooped with sheer Joy as they sped down the Hloes. 1 am told that the beauty of that day made some of our friends a little heady. Three young men In restless excitement struck out on their own cross-country, leaving the designated trail behind. And for their rash act they did what (I urn sure) they were positive they could never do; they got lost. It Is here that I would like to pause in my story and suggest three things one should always remember in case a similar situation should arise as the one described above. This pertains to all outdoor activities, whether skiing, hiking, hunting, camping, or whatever: 1 ) Never split up from your companion (and never go Into a -wilderness alone! ) 2) Wear bright colored clothes when you're in the woods. Orange is recommended for best visibility. 3) Instead of wandering around and around In circles, find a reasonably comfortable, safe place and stay there. Remember to settle in a place which can be seen from the air. There are perhaps over a dozen precautions I could list, and there are probably a doen more that the Search and Rescue Posse would recommend Instead, I'll leave this at the easy number of J'three." Fortunately, our young Heppner adventurers were found within a few hours of belnc missed. And the caravan hobbled its way back to arrive on their prospective doorsteps six hours later than expected; but much the wiser, dead beat, and very very happy.
