Cardinal girls

Tammy Holtz led the Cardi
nal girls to a victory as she
scored 16 points as the
Cardinals defeated the Condon
Blue-Devils 28 - 27.
The Cardinals were out
scored in the first quarter by
two points as the Blue-Devils
took an 8 - 10 lead.
In the second quarter the
two teams were evenly
matched as both teams scored
nine points each. The Blue
Devils went to the locker room

The lone JV team was
defeated by Condon 16 - 27 on
Tuesday, December 15.
The Condon Blue-Devils
controlled the game as they
came out in the first quarter to
outscore the Cardinals 15 - 2.
The Cardinals held the
Blue-Devils to four in the
secpnd quarter but were only
able to put in two points for
themselves. The score at the
end of the half showed Condon
on top 4 - 19.
Spray Eagles
defeat lone

The lone JV team was
defeated 28 - 35 by the Spray
Eagles on Friday. December
18.
The Eagles took the lead in
the first quarter as they
outscored the Cardinals 5-2.
The Cardinals were again
outscored in the second quar
ter as Spray moved their lead
to seven points at the half, 8 -15.
The Cardinals kept up with
the Eagles pretty well in the
second half as they were
outscored by two in the third
quarter. The score showed
Spray on top 16 - 25 at the
beginning of the final quarter.
The Cardinals outscored the
Eagles in the last quarter but
were unable to catch the
Eagles as they were defeated
28 - 35.

Over 160 parents and children turned out Monday n:ght for the annual Cub Scout Christmas
dinner held at the Elks Lodge.
Awards and recognitions for work over the past year were presented to pack leaders, assistants
and others who had made the scouts successful in this area.
Pack leader Steve Peck was master of ceremonies for the event.

eighth grade boys won their
second basketball game of the
season last Thursday, Dec. 17
against Echo 53 45.
The team now stands 2 - 1.
winning their first game
against Pilot Rock and suffer
ing their first defeat at
Columbia Junior High.

Heppner Mustangs had staged
a final period rally to stave off
Elgin 77 - 60 last Friday and
win the team's fourth straight
game of the season.

proved its record to 2 - 1 by
defeating the Hermiston soph
omore team 63 - 50 in
Hermiston on Thursday, Dec.
17.
Heppner again utilized a
full-court press to its advan
tage, keeping it on most of the
game and getting 27 steals.
The Mustangs jumped out to
an early 8 - 0 lead before
Hermiston could call timeout,
but let the Bulldogs come
back, 16- l5afterone quarter.
However. Heppner pulled
away in the second quarter,
led 29-22 at the half, and were
never seriously threatened
again in the game.
Marty Britt led Heppner's
scoring with 20 points, follow
ed by Rod Cole with 14. and
Greg Orr with 13.
The Mustangs were outshol
from the field (.361 to .353).
but made 15 of 26 shots from

Tuesday. December 15. The
Cardinals were defeated 36 -57.
The Cardinals controlled the
Blue-Devils scoring attack in
the first quarter as they held
them to 10 points. The
Cardinals scored eight in the
quarter.

The lone varsity boys were
defeated by Spray 34 - 48 on
Friday. December 18.
The Cardinals were out
scored in the first quarter as
the Eagels jumped out to a 4 -12
lead.
Spray's John Wight scored
10 of his 18 points in the second
quarter to lead the Eagles to a
10 - 32 half time advantage.
The Cardinals outscored the
Eagles in the second half but
not enough as they were
handed a 34 - 48 loss.
Craig Gutierrez led the
Cardinals with 15 points.

Heppner crashed the boards
for 53 rebounds, led by Orr and
Sid Kennedy with 12 apiece
and Cole with eight. Eric
Thompson had four assists
and Orr collected seven steals.
In the special rating system,
Orr led with 25. Cole had
18. Brill had 14. and
Kennedy had 13, said Hep
pner Coach Brent Eggers.
Heppner had its highest team
total ever at 73.
"With the exception of a
stretch in the first quarter, the
kids phiyed excellent hall,"

Sandra Ward had eight
points in the second quarter to
give the Mustangs a 12 - 25
advantage at the half.
In the third quarter the
Cardinals were outscored by
two points as they held the
Mustangs to eight points for
the quarter.
The Cardinals were out
scored by one in the last
quarter as the Mustangs took
