EIGHT-Tlie Heppner Gaiette-Hmes, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, December 10. 1981 Cardinal varsity boys By MICHELLE LARUE The Cardinals varsity boys were defeated by the Heppner Mustangs 31 70 on Saturday. December 5. The Mustangs opened up a 12 point lead in the first quarter as they outseored the Cardinals 5 -17. Both teams scored 12 points in the second quarter as the Cardinals went into the locker room at the half down 17 - 29. Dorian Forrar scored 15 points in the third quarter to give the Mustangs a 25 - 52 lead. The Cardinals were out scored 6 -18 in the last quarter as the Mustangs took a 31 70 victory over the Cardinals. Tim Patton and Donnie Taylor scored eight points each for the Cardinals. Friday, Dec. 4. The Cardinals were out scored in the first quarter as the Vikings moved out to a 8 -13 lead. The Cardinals gained some ground in the second quarter as Donnie Taylor sunk 10 points for the Cardinals. The Cards went into the locker room down by one point 24 25. The Vikings came out for the third quarter and scored 18 points to advance their lead to six. 37 - 43. Both teams were held to eight points in the final quarter with only three field goals being" scored. The Vikings handed the Cardinals their first defeat 45-51. Donnie Taylor led the Car dinals in scoring as he scored 16 points. Tim Patton and Taylor each had 12 rebounds to lead the Cardinals on the boards. lone JV's defeated by Umatilla By MICHELLE LARl'E The lone Junior Varsity team was defeated by the Umatilla Vikings 35 - 46 on Friday. December 4. The Vikings scored 15 first quarter points to take the lead 15 - 8. The Cardinals outseored the Vikings in the second quarter, but their efforts were not enough as they went to the locker room down 15-21. The Cardinals were out scored badly in the third quarter as the Vikings opened up a big gap in the score, 19 -39. In the last quarter the Cardinals gained some ground but ran out of time as they were defeated 35 - 46. Leading scorers for the Cardinals were Mark Meyers with 12 points and Vince McElligott with 11. The Vikings shot 20 of 55 for 36 percent from the floor and 11 of 20 for 55 percent from the free throw line. The Cardinals lost Jeff Hams late in the fourth quarter as he re-in jured an ankle hurt in football. According to Coach LaRue the Cards played pretty well for their first game. John Cardinal JV boys win over Mustangs By MICHELLE LARUE The lone J.V. team pulled out a victory over the Heppner Mustangs 37 - 32. on Saturday. December 5. At the end of the first quarter the score board show ed the score tied at six. The Cardinals came out in the second quarter to open up a 19 - 14 lead at the half. The Mustangs closed the lead to one in the third quarter as they outseored the Cards to make the score 25 - 24. Heppner frosh win over Hermiston The Heppner High School freshman boys team won over the Hermiston freshman team by a wide margin. 44 - 19 Monday night. Dec. 7. defeated by Mustangs HHS freshman team defeated in first two games of season The Heppner High freshman basketball team was defeated at home by Spray in the first game of the season, Thursday. Dec. 3. 37 - 45. The top three scorers were David Green with 10 points. Cam George - 9 points and Kevin Kennison with seven. lone Jr. High boys lose in season opener By MICHELLE LARUE The lone Jr. High boys opened their season by travel ing to Stanfield. the Cards were defeated 44 - 17. The Cardinals have a very young team this year and faced the older and more experienced Stanfield boys. The Cardinals were out rebounded badly by the bigger Stanfield boys which led them to their victory. Stanfield jumped out to a 2 -14 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Cardinals held lone Jr. High girls win 20-18 over Stanfield, By MICHELLE LARUE The lone Jr. High girls opened their season with a victory as they defeated Stanfield 20 - 18. The Cardinals jumped out to take a 8 - 4 lead in the first quarter. Stanfield came back in the second quarter to score six points to take a 9 - 10 lead at the half. At the end of the third quarter the scoreboard showed Stanfield with a three point advantage. 13 - 16. Deena Hams brought the Cardinals back as she scored seven of her 13 points in the fourth quarter to take the Cardinals to a 20 - 18 victory. High scorer for the Cardi nals was Deena Hams with 13. Sandy Wright had six and Mary Ann Alvarado had one point. Playing but not scoring were Patty McElligott. Rondi Tews and Joycelyn Ferrel. The Cardinals scored four points in the first quarter as Umatilla's Kathy Sheets sunk six points in the first quarter to put the Vikings ahead. The Cardinals came out in the third quarter to outscore the Vikings by one to make the score 17 - 2a. The Cardinal girls rallied in the fourth quarter to score U points and held the Vikings to four. The crowd came alive as the Cardinals handed the Vikings a 28 - 27 loss. The Miss Kodeo America pageant began in 1955 as a three-day event with 10 participants. It has grown to be one of the top pageants for young women in the country. To compete for the title of America's all-around horse woman, contestants must be single, age 18 to 24, and have won their state title during a pageant held in conjunction with a state rodeo. The reigning 1981 Miss Rodeo America is Kathleen "Kathy' Martin, of Pueblo, Colorado.
