The lli-ppner fiazrtte-Tlmen. I1iipnpr, Oregon, Thursday. December 10. 1981-FIVE Around About lly J an tine Wealherford Much wailing and gnashing of teeth has been heard throughout the area since the November electric co-op billings have been received. Practically everyone is shocked by the increased charges and is very upset that another two rate Increases are foreseen next year. It seems that having been previously notified of this current increase and now knowing about future increases doesn't help too much. Many are quick to forget what good rates we have enjoyed here for many years. It is hard to hear several voices praising the co-op through the loud complaining. However, again Columbia Basin crews have been responsible for doing much of the work of installing the pretty Christmas lights through town--and it seems that this year the lights extend even farther north on Main Street than they have before. Also, quile a few citizens, me Included, m e grateful that the co-op crews helped us after the recent severe winds had broken trees and done other damage. Isn't the town Christmas tree the most perfect specimen placed in front of the hotel building in many years? It is so full and so symmetrical; It is a shame that the lights can't come lower on it but because of past vandalism it is felt that wouldn't be wise. Just why removing Christmas lights and smashing them around can bring anyone satisfaction is hard for most of us to understand. Many families are getting their trees selected and will soon have them up and lighted with their lights shining through home windows. The large, thickly lighted tree in front of a home on Quiad Street has been such a pretty, early town-brightener. Last weekend outside lightings began shining from many spots. This week front doors will be seen decked with greenery and gay ribbon bows because the ladies of the homes either built or bought Christmas wreaths or swags at the Garden Club workshop in connection with the Artifactory . For a time on Saturday afternoon about 20 women were absorbed in wiring greenery together in the 4-H Annex w here they were surrounded by the beautiful paintings on exhibit by Morrow County Artists and where everyone enjoyed the smell of the fresh greenery. The A AUW -organized Artifactory drew a fine crowd from before its 10 a.m. opening until its 4 p.m. closing. It seems that after many moves the Artifactory has found an adequate, practical home with ample parking for patron cars. Those who have worked with this venture through the years recall its growth through several locations such as the Degree of Honor Building, St. Patrick's Hall, and the then -vacant Gillam-Bisbee building's downstairs, then-vacant Gilliam-Bisbee buillding's downstairs. The new well established, first Saturday in December event couldn't possibly be accommodated in any of its earlier locations. So it is good that the fairground building is available. This sale has become such a worthwhile outlet for many talented craftspersons and kitchen artists and a large assortment of other creative persons. The AAUW still sells books; however, this year they offered new books for children, not used books. The cooperative arrangements that brought the Greens Workshop and the great oil painters into joint occupancy of the 411 Annex has increased the excitement and overall community benefit of the Artifactory. As the Christmas Holiday nears, lots of folks are finding their days whizzing by and seeming very short. Calendars re getting well filled. This week's Farm and City Banquet . at the fairground on Friday night will be a top community event. Most of the churches and many social groups have planned Christmas programs and parties for the next several weeks. We all know that December 21 is actually the year's shortest day. but the days surrounding that date are mighty short, too. Santa to return Sat.
