September 17, 1N1 SHERIFF'S REPORT lone Garden Club discusses botanical names Heppner News On Sept. 5. a two vehicle accident between mile post 33 and 34 on Hwy. 74 between lone and Lexington was repor ted. One driver was reported to have been injured and both drivers were taken to Pioneer Memorial Hospital. Sheriff Fetsch responded to the call. Also on Sept. 5. a one vehicle accident occurred near mile post 165 on 1-84. A Boardman city officer and the Oregon Stale Police responded to the call. On Sept. 6 a man was reported drowning at the Boardman Marina. The drow ned victim was Ayson De Leon . 18 of Portland. On Sept. 7, Larry Smythe, Boardman, reported the theft of stereo equipment from his car. A Boardman police offic er responded to the call. In another Sept. 5 incident. Monty (Hen Leathers was arrested by Arlington State Police on a Morrow County 5th Justice Court warrant for allegedly driving under the influence of intoxicants. On Sept 8 Julie Kay Dupuis, 22. Pendleton, was killed in a vehicle roll -over accident on I-K4. Passenger Craig Cuts forth. also of Pendleton was taken to a hospital and was reported in good condition. The Oregon State Police handled the accident. On Sept. 9 an ambulance was requested for a man reporied to have fallen 22 ft. at Western Alfalfa on Petterson Ferry Rd. A Boardman ambu lance responded to the call. Also on Sept. 9 a grass fire was reported on Paul Smith Koad. south of Wilson Road. The Boardman Fire Dept. e-'.iiided to the call. in another Sept. 9 incident, a large grass fire was reported humiug between milepost 156 and 15f along 1-84. The Hoardsnan Fire Dept. and bombing range personnel re sponded to the call. Another grass fire was reported on Sept. 9. near Patterson-Ferry Road. The Umatilla Army Depot respon ded to the call. On Sept 10. the burning of an old house and barn was reported out of control on the Rlair Phillipi place on West Kunze Road. The Boardman Fire Dept. responded to the call. Also on Sept. 11. George Griffith reported a break-in and theft Rt his home in the Morgan area. A Morrow County Sheriff's deputy re sponded to the call. . On Sept. 12, a grass fire was reported between Willow Fork Drive and Kincaid. Board man, The Boardman Fire Dept. responded to the call. In another Sept. 12 incident, a fire on lower Eight Mile near the Lee Pettyjohn place was reported. The Morrow County Grain Growers responded to the call. "Know Your Botanical Names" was the subject presented by Delta Huher nt the September 9 meeting of the lone Garden Club. Joyce Buchanan and Leila Palmer acted as hostesses. Mrs. Huber stated that the same flower may have many common names. Therefore, it is helpful to have an authorita tive botanical name to classify flowers to simplify the pro cess. Cerolus Linneus. a Swedish botanist, who lived from 1707 to 1778, classified nil plants known so there would be no doubt as to their names. Most plants are known by the genus and species name such as the common name mav be Post Office expands Postmaster Lavelle Partlow and Donna Eppenbach, a clerk at the Irrigon Post Office, which has recently been remodeled to provide additional lobby space and more lock boxes for postal patrons. The entrance is now on North Main St. Mrs. Partlow entered the postal service as Acting Post master at the Irrigon Post office in Feb." of 1958. aTie served in that capacity to the present time. When she began her work, the office had. around 40 lock box patrons. The office now serves 340 lock box patrons, with a waiting list for the boxes that will soon be installed. Mrs. Eppenbach began working as a clerk in March 1972 and has served until the present time. The growth in the community necessitated larger quarters which are being utilized and appreciated by the employees. The rural route serves 360 families, a large ' increase from the 50 families served 25 years ago. Mrs. Partlow is anticipating retiring at the end of the year. Base course was placed on Lower Willow Creek Road between stations 1020 to 30 00. Rockfill is being placed on Balm Fork Bridge abut ment 1. Select subbase is being placed on Willow Creek from stations 42 00 to 5300 and on the Balm Fork relocated road. Concrete placements continue on Wil low Creek bridge abutment no. 1. Reprap production has begun in the quarry site east of the Thompson residence. Phase 1 of the Willow Creek road excavation is underway at station 152 00.
