( By ANNE MURRAY
As the crowd started set
tling down to watch the
Heppner Mustangs against the
Weston McEwen Tigerseots, a
person could feci the anxiety
growing.
The Mustangs had revenge
in their eyes for the Tigerseots
were the only team to defeat
the Mustangs last year. They
shared the title of Columbia
Basin Conference Champions
but this year the Mustangs
have different plans.
Friday night the Mustangs
started their plans rolling.
While the clock was ticking
the time off the first quarter,
the two teams were locked in
head-to-head combat. There
were only occasional big
breaks, such as when tailback

As consumers, there are certain things people should know
in advance for their own protection before buying or ordering
by mail. Unfortunately, I was painfully reminded of that just
recently.
Shortly before we were married three years ago, Larry and
I picked out a very reasonably priced and handsome set of
ironstone to use as every day china at one of Portland's
major department stores.
Through the generosity of others, we acquired as wedding
gifts four place settings of six pieces, plus some serving
dishes.
After we were married," the department store began
marking down certain pieces of the ironstone to what seemed
to be bargain prices. (I should have been suspicious then.)
Larry and I eagerly grabbed them up.
Now I pause and reflect how peculiar it was of the store to
offer our stoneware for such a low sum in thetfirst place. Of
course what the store refrained to mention was that our
wonderful wedding china was being discontinued.
We stumbled on that fact at practically the last possible
moment while purchasing a bowl and finding it extremely
difficult to do so.
"Why, didn't you know? exclaimed the saleswoman. "We
no longer carry this and all our remaining stock is at our
Salem store."
Larry and I pooled our paychecks and frantically ordered
all we could afford to lay our fingers on. It took numerous
phone calls and several weeks of waiting before our fragile
shipment arrived in Heppner.
Impatiently, Larry tore open the box and checked the top
plates. All seemed in order and we stored the carton safely
away.
Six months later Larry and I learned our lesson. While
spring-cleaning we came upon the stored box and decided to
unpack the stoneware.
One at a time we pulled the plates out and tore the
protective brown paper from around each of them. I quickly
set the first two in the dishwasher while Larry peered into the
box in dismay. Four brand new dinner plates sat in their
brown wrappers, each perfectly broken into two uniform
pieces.
The moral of this sad tale is: always check your shipment
thoroughly and immediately, even when you intend to store
he item in the same box.
. I still grieve over our four dead dishes and the four less
people we can have over for dinner tonight.
