When it comes to selecting
melons In the produce section
of the supermarket, there are
those who make their choice
by sniffing, and others who
squeeze, Are you a sniffer or a
squeezer? Cantuloupe should
hove a fragrant, sweet odor,
with a course netting on the
rind. A slightly sunken smooth
scar at the stem end shows the
melon was mature when
picked.
Watermelons will by syme
trical in shape, firm to the
touch, and velvety in apear
ance when ripe. A yellowish
color on the underside of the
melon says the fruit is at its
best.
Crenshaw melons are more
expensive. They have a thick,
Juicy, very rich but delicious
flesh. They're ready to eat
when the skin color is almost a
solid yellow, according to
Velma Seat, food marketing
specialist. Honeydew melons
have a creamy yellow color
Co. Health
Dept. sets
records
By MAKY ANN CKIU'i.I.O
Morrow County Health De
partment set two records
during the month of July,
stated Put Wright, County
Heulth nurse, in the July
report to County Court.
Friday, July 10, 52 people
visited the Health Department
office In Lexington and 59
people visited the Health
Department office In Irrigon.
Two cases of tulmrculosis
were treated during the
nionth. Thank goodness that
today tuberculosis is rendered
non-contagious after only a
few days of medication," said
Wright.
It was decided during the
July administrators meeting,
that all Morrow County
schools will deny enrollment
to kindergarten and first
grade students unless a shot
report shows that the child has
received recommended im
munizations. Wright further reported that
there is presently a confirmed
case of measles in Condon.
The Health Department is
currently on the lookout for its
possible spread into Morrow
County.
"Most of our susceptible
individuals have been vaccin
ated against it," stated Pat
Wright.

when ripe. If you see a
whitish-green rind, it's not yet
ripe, Unless completely ripe
when purchased, honeydew
and cantaloupes will be im
proved by keeping them two
or three days at room temper
ature, rather than placing
immediately in the refrigerat
or. Melons will not become
sweeter but , they will be
Juicier and have a softer
texture.
High in vitamins and
appetite appeal, melons are a
good bet for summer meals
