OTHER THINGS OF INTEREST DOWN THE COLUMBIA GORGE Have you noticed the three large wind generators as you drive down the Gorge? The world's largest wind energy generators-three MOD-2 tur bines, near Goldendale, Wash, have made that site the "Wind Energy" capital of the world, according to OSU Energy gram. Each of the 350 foot horizon tal axis rotors, (longer than a football Field) is mounted atop a 200-foot tower with self-contained elevators. The 80-ton rotors were built by Boeing at a cost of $4.5 million each. The generators cut in with 14-mph winds and provide maximum output of 2.5 megawatts in winds between 27 and 45 mph with rotors turning at a controlled 17.5 rpm and blade tip speeds of 187 mph. Elec tricity from the units is fed into the Northwest power grid via a BPA substation. We all know that the winds - blow down the Gorge. . . and " we all know that new or additional energy sources are needed. Perhaps in the future there will be many more of these giant windmills churn ing out megawatts to help provide this need. In the meantime, it is fun to look across at the strange "wind mills" as you drive down the Columbia River. My family has speculated about them ... and 111 bet yours, has: toe. BIRDINE TAKES BRIEF LEAVE FROM WORK BIRDINE TAKES BRIEF LEAVE FROM WORK Some of you may have heard rumors that I am taking an unexpected leave from work ... and unfortunately, this time off will extend until after the first of July. This doesn't mean that the usual 4-H home economics trainings have been forsaken, only that they will be moved ahead until a later date in July. In the meantime. 4-H lead ers or members who have questions or need assistance are asked to call the Extension office where Lenna or Claudia will be available to answer questions. In July there will be a foods training, a style revue train ing, and a 4-H Home Econom ics superintendents meeting We hope that 4-H members will be busy with camp and Summer Week throughout July, and ready for home ec projects when Birdine returns to work.
