Dtvid and April Hilton Sykes, Publishers LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Heppner 4th of July display cancelled To the Editor: Two weeks ago the Heppner Lions Club announced plans to provide a 4th of July fireworks display for the community. During the last two weeks of discussing these plans with other groups and individuals, we have concluded that hav ing a fireworks display would not be advisable. The main reason for the cancellation is that we do not want to interfere or compete with the annual celebrations at lone and Condon. We hope Urging funding for legal aid To the Editor: So many important social services are being axed by the president this year, it's hard for people to keep track. One which is targeted for total elimination is legal services for the poor. It would be a great tragedy if the ability to have a lawyer was restricted to the wealthy. The Oregon State Clients Council is an association of low-income Oregonians that defends the interests of those , who must rely on legal aid. We know that legal aid is often the last resort for poor people who have suffered injustice. Legal aid is essential to protecting the constitutional right of millions of Americans. Although the president wants to eliminate legal services entirely, the U.S. Wedding Announcements .Dee Hedman and Bob Miller will be married on June 20, 1981. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arnie Hedman, Heppner, and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Miller, Hermiston. The 2 p.m. ceremony will take place at the United Methodist Church in Heppner. A reception will follow in the church basement. All friends and relatives are cordially invited. We hope this change of plans will not cause anyone pro blems with their weekend plans. The Heppner Lions Club will still be selling fireworks on mainstreet June 27th thru July 4th. All proceeds will be donated to the solar heating project. Heppner Lions Club George Koffler Secretary Senate seems to be willing to simply gut the program. They have passed a budget which would reduce funding for justice for poor people by 70 percent. The U.S. House of Representatives has been much more reasonable, bud geting a cut of about 20 percent. Our Senate delegation is , very influential and could sway the decision to save legal services. The Oregon State Clients Council urges all Oregonians to contact their Senators by letter, phone, telegram to urge reasonable funding for legal services. Evelyn Michael Chairperson.
