ming tank. This was decided
by the park commission
organized yesterday at the
office of J.J. Nys by the
American legion and Lions
Club committees.
i.uiuxy of talent coming
here June 20 through June
24. ..The free choutaqua will
offer a fine holiday attraction
for all of Morrow County. Two
plays are slated "The Big
Push" and "Kibitzer" along
with a variety of musical and
Rpcaking talent.

One of the Heppner Wrang
lers biggest events of the year
the Heppner Heyday, will be
held Sunday at the rodeo field.
The group will parade down
town starting at 1 p m. and the
rodeo will start at 1 :30.
Lyle Jensen, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Lincoln Nash, was re
cently elected the sports
editor of the Index, Pacific
University's newspaper, for
the IBM 57 school year.
The past week brought the
hotipst weather of the year
with the mercury climbing to
an official BU degrees Friday.
The warming temperatures
brought a series of thunder
storms which added some
moisture to an already wet
May. Len Gilliam. Heppner
weather observer, recorded
.04 inch Friday and an
additional .13 inch from Tues
day night's storm. ..bringing
May's total to nearly two
inches.
FIVE YF.AR8 AGO
Plans for Heppner's July 4
celebration were disclosed by
Mike Sweeney, Bicentennial
committee chairman at the
Chamber of Commerce, Mon
day. Sweeney reiterated the com
mittee's plans saying "We had
a kick-off at the Pioneer
Picnic, last year. Last July
residents responded to the
Bicentennial Wagon Train
with one of the largest
turnouts at Cecil, when an
estimated 1.300 people jam
med the small community to
celebrate the occasion. It was
one of the largest turnouts in
the three-state area."
Presently the Bicentennial
committee has three projects:
the Democrat Gulch School -house.
Hager Park and the
restoration of the Hardman
Community Center. A total of
$16,5(10 has been received in
state funds for these projects
not counting monies received
from private individuals.
On the Fourth a breakfast in
the park will be put on by the
American legion: a flag
ceremony and the dedication
of the schoolhousp will follow:
the company will then march
to the county courthouse to
dedicate the new flagpole
presented by the Elks IMnc
In the afternoon a jackpot
rodeo will be held at the
fairgrounds: in the evening
Jim Rogers will cater a dinner
with the proceeds going to the
Bicentennial Committee. That
night there will he fireworks
at lone.
Arlington is planning a
celebration June 20-21. to
commemorate the city's 100
year Centennial. Doc Severin
sen of the "Tonight Show" is
coming home to help celebrate
this historic event. Co-Chairmen
are Mrs. Ada (Lee)
Connor and Bus Clough.
The opening weekend (June
20 21) will feature opening
ceremonies, a chicken bar
becue (tickets are available
now by writing Portland
General Electric. Box 19H1.
Arlington 97R12). an art show
by people who are living or
have lived in. Arlington, a
balloon release, a street
dance, and children's activi
ties sand castle building,
greased pole climb, and

Registration for visitors will
be at Portland General Elec
tric Building on the mall.
Name tags will be available.

drawing by Alen (Mrs. Louis
Rucker. a long-time resident
of the area, and the frame
work is by Shari Bitlinger
(Mrs. I,ee a newcomer of
eight years.
The buckles are made of
pewter and show several
items associated with Arling
ton - the old lerrv. geese
migrating overhead, the river
and the town snuggled be
neath the bluffs.
The first five buckles are
being auctioned off to the
highest bidders. Bids are
being accepted from now until
September 1 at 12 noon. Bids
will be opened at 2 p.m. Bids
must be accompanied by a
check to cover the amount of
the bid. Unsuccessful bids will
have their checks returned.
Minimum bid is $15. Buckles
are available now for $15. plus
mailing cost at the PGE
office.
Stationary. T-shirts and
hats which have mesh backs
are also available at Portland
General Electric on the mall.
