Many people in South Morrow County may have noticed
that the Jim Ackley Teen Cluh has been having both financial
trouble and trouble acquiring adult supervision.
I'm sure most everyone agrees that Jim's idea of a place
for young people to go is wonderful. But no one has taken the
time to organize a place except Jim Ackley.
Several young people attending Heppner High School have
been voicing their dissatisfaction to me this year over the
lack of after school activities and recreation So, to get some
answers on what people's preferences are, I circulated a
questionnaire around the high school with the faculty's
assistance.
The form asked the student to number the items in the
order of preference. Some students preferred only one or two
""items. Others marked all seven. The seventh items was listed
tLfls "other" to give them the chance to list an idea of their
own. Consequently, this allowed them to choose more than
one item that interested them
The response was quite good. Seventy students
participated. Thirty-three were male and thirty-seven were
female. There were eight 14-year-olds, sixteen 15-year-olds,
thirty 16-year-olds, fifteen 17-year-olds, and one was 18
Below is a sample of the questionnaire. Each number
represents how many young people picked each item as one
of their top three choices. The choices are listed in order of
popularity.
A movie theater - 69.
A dance hall for people under twenty-one - 50. Eleven
students suggest one for all ages.
A fast food restaurant such as A & W or Dairy Queen - 48.
A taco or pizza place was also suggested
The Ackley Teen Club with some changes - 24 Changes
included more adult supervision, more games, a juke box,
more space, and expansion of hours.
A stage theater for the community where students could be
employed - 20.
The Ackley Teen Club left the way it is - 18.
Other: Students listed the following in space provided.
An indoor rodeo arena, a motorcycle race track, a
motorcycle club, a hobby shop, summer team sports,
summer bowling, more team sports for high school girls, the
roller skating rink open all weekend, an outdoor skating rink,
and a community athletic club which would have the use of
the Heppner pool.
Okay Morrow County, the kids have spoken. Where do we
go from here?
