. ... S . , ... . ,. -- , "i, w ' ' A "- , TWELVE The lleppner Gn-eUe-Ttmes, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday. May 21. " Around About with Justine Weatherford The Heppner Methodists had their faith in the power of prayer reinforced when they were able to hold their lawn sale outside last Saturday, between Friday's downpour and Sunday's shower. Again the sale committee had fortunately appointed the pastor, Mike Sheridan, as chairman for weather. Anyone who didn't gather bargain items at that sale must be looking forward to the even larger lone United Church of Christ Sale and barbecue on June's first Saturday. Something needs to be done here about the scheduling of school events during the too merry month of May. Several school musical programs, as well as Jim Ackley's benefit for youth spaghetti dinner and concert were rather poorly attended. " This was not because these programs were in any way unworthy-it was simply that most people just can't be out every night attending one or more events. It was sad that the spring concerts didn't have much publicity or news coverage and that Ackley's effort, which featured some of the kids he - has enjoyed since he first met them during their fifth-grade year, came during such a super-busy time. The now famous Heppner adult vocalists, Ron McDonald and Linda Gifford, displayed their talents at the spaghetti concert last Thursday evening. How regretful it is that many missed hearing Mrs. Gifford sing the "Theme from Mahogany" and Mr. McDonald doing "Clancy Lowered the Boom." Several friends told me how much they enjoyed Blue Mountain C.C's production of "Brigadoon." Again, I regret that the hectic scheduling of this month made it impossible for me to go along. Of course, part of the blame for my over-scheduling is entirely mine. I so wanted to take two BMCC classes during this busy time. I really enjoy my Tuesday night sign language class in Lexington School and am very delighted by my Thursday evening plus field trips class in field identification at Heppner High School. Last Saturday from 7a.m. until 3 p.m. two vehicles carried class members to the mountains south of town where we met and learned something about many birds, wildflowers and mushrooms from our excellent instructor Steve Brownfield. Up at the Tamarack Lookout, from ground still dusted by snow, we collected five or six different species of mushrooms, and met some delightfully named wildflowers, such as purple catspaw or wooly britches, grass widows, Mary blue-lips and old man's whiskers. We descended to snow-free Bull Prairie Lake where we were ready for our sack lunches before we tramped the path around the lake. New birds checked out during the day included red-tailed hawks, golden eagles, a short-ared owl. a belted kingfisher, red-shafted flickers, a violet-green swallow, a mountain chickadee, a purple finch, some pine siskins and several lovely western and mountain bluebirds. As we came homeward we turned onto the Parker's Mill Road and stopped at Bob and Aloha DeSpain's cabin where we enjoyed a fine coffeebreak before the wonderful fireplace that couple built. It was in front of that cabin that we viewed the prettiest bluebirds I ever expect to see. From this trip I brought home a half-dozen morel mushrooms which after a night of soaking in salt-water, slicing and sauteing in butter, were added to my Sunday evening scrambled eggs. How delicious! Last Saturday evening a "Meet the Myers" party brought a fine group of near neighbors and others to the Weatherford home to get acquainted with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Myers who since Tuesday night. May 12, are new residents of the pinkish house on the corner of South Court and Cannon Streets. Bill Myers, an employee of the Soil Conservation Service has lived in Heppner since Oct. 1979. He is from Corvallis where he attended public schools and was graduated from OSU. Bill spent two years with the Peace Corps in Iran. He played recreational basketball here last winter. On May 2, 1981, Bill married vivacious Margee Hickey who is a graduate of the University of Southern California and who worked at her profession, occupational therapy, in the San Diego area before their marriage. Heppner friends, John and Debbie Nordheim went south with Bill for the wedding. What a good citizen Margee is-she registered for voting at the courthouse just two days after her first day here. She also attended the Pioneer Memorial Hospital Open House last Friday afternoon which was skipped by many longer-time residents. Each year the community is invited to visit the hospital during National Hospital Week and the board members. Hospital Auxiliary and staff make nice preparations for visitors. But again, like at those May school programs, attendance was very disappointing. Margee Myers said she was very pleased to see the hospital and to meet R.N's Marge Kenny and Molly Rhea and laboratory and X-ray technician Betty McEwen, board chairman Fred Martin, board member Ed Dick and several members of the auxiliary. Margee found the hospital "larger and better" than she expected- Busy Soroptimists Jeanne Sumner, Clista Venard, Marlene Gray and Mary Beamer Goheen enjoyed a great trip to the 63rd Northwestern Regional Conference in Anchorage. Mary and Clista went on to Nome on a 727 cargo and passenger plane where they had several unusual adventures. They ice-fished in the Bering Sea, looked in on the oldest saloon in Nome where a can of beer sells for $2.50 and mixed drinks are $2.75, and learned of the seven-level beach there. They saw old gold dredges near where old mining claims are about to be reactivated. Mary learned that in 1899 during gold-rush days there had been over 20,000 persons living in tents on the Nome beaches. They saw the King Island Eskimos perform native dances. These ladies returned to Heppner in the middle of last week and then Mary and five other members went off to Enterprise to an area Soroptimist meeting last Saturday. Experienced traveler and good photographer Mary has shown me some of her interesting pictures of the Baker-Sumpter trip. Now I am looking forward to seeing her Alaskan pictures. Don't forget the big Pioneer Memorial Picnic this Sunday. The eight Weatherfords at my home will be off for a long Saturday near Arlington where we will join family members from all over the U.S. in celebrating the centennial of the planting of the first wheat in north-central Oregon by W.W. Weatherford, my husband's grandfather. Brother-in-law Marion has worked all year in arranging this reunion. When mid-June arrives some of us will feel a real letdown, I suppose, as activities slow down. Next year the scheduling should work out better because Memorial Weekend goes back to its traditional end-of-the-month date again.
