Zeta Hager Brosnan
long time Morrow native
Zetta Hager was born in Heppner in 1888. just three years
after the birth of Morrow County. Her mother told her that
she was the first child baptized in St. Patrick's Church then
up on the south hill where the Legion Hall is now.
Zetta s parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Hager (he was from
Missouri and she. Belle Wilkins, was from Vermont) gave
their daughters interesting names Zetta and Zilpha.
One of Zetta 's early memories is of a train-trip to Vermont
where she celebrated her 6th birthday. Zetta went through
grade school in Heppner, went to convent high school in
Walla Walla, graduating in 1906, and going on at Washington
State College at Pullman the next year. She worked at
several places in Heppner-at Jim Hart's Confectionary Store
and at the post office while W.W. Smead was postmaster.
After she left Pullman, she worked as a telephone operator in
Weiser, Idaho, for a while.
In 1908 she and JohrfBi uenan were married in St. ftttdLfa
Church and went to live on the Brosnan Ranch at Lena where
Zetta still lives today. The Brosnans lived rather near the
Franklin family who kept a stage station where passengers
stayed overnight and horses were exchanged for a fresh
team. The hill east of Lena is named after that family.
For a time, Zetta kept the Lena Post Office on her front
porch. The first store at Lena was north of where the Eddie
Brosnans live now. Around 1910, a later store was built north
of there where the Ebb and Allen Hughes' barn stands now. It
had the post office with the store downstairs and a hall
upstairs that was used for dances and community
gatherings. Some of the lumber from this store was used to
build a shed now standing on the Merlin Hughes' place.
Zetta recalls that young people liked to come to Heppner
and join the town youths dancing in the hall above where

Murray's Drug Store is now. The ranch folks rode their
horses to town. The young men usually took up a collection to
pay the piano player who was often V'i Hart.
Zetta's husband. John, died in IttO'i. She lives alone in a
cozy trailer up creek from her son. Jerry, and
daughter-in-law, Marian, who operate the family ranch
help from their son. Eddie, his wife. Lorraine, and their five
splendid fifth generation Brosnans. Zetta has done acres of
fancy work, making afghans as gifts for most family
members and her many friends
