Break an egg
Last Sunday was Easter, a time for family reunions,
church, and chocolate bunnies.
To some. Easter means shedding those drab winter clothes
for white pants and pastels. To others it means staying home
by the TV set and watching baseball or Judy Garland singing
in "Easter Parade."
And let us not forget Easter Egg Hunts:
To prepare for this annual event, the eggs must first be
boiled. Of course, it is to be expected that dozens will crack
and therefore be useless when they hit the hot water. But
what does one do with a pile of hard boiled eggs?
The next step includes a table strewn with paints, bushes,
and children. The result is several pairs of small blue and
yellow hands and faces wearing shirts to match, not to
mention a few more eggs to add to the pile of casualties.
Finally, mothers everywhere can always count on a few
that won't be found by the Easter egg hunters. Mothers know
that weeks from now those colorful little stragglers will
reveal themselves with the dreaded odor of rotten eggs.
(Usually behind the couch when company is present.)
Why?" Moms cry out from all corners of the earth, "Why
eggs??"
Why did you ask? Well, I'll tell you why.
Eggs are linked with Easter because they are thought to
hold the seeds of life. The ancient Chinese, Egyptians,
Persians. Gauls, Greeks, and Romans all viewed eggs as
symbolizing fertility.
Coloring eggs was started by pagans who were yearning
for the bright colors of spring. Eventually, Christians
extended the custon by dyeing their eggs red to symbolize the
blood of Christ.
So, Mom. whv break a tradition?
