SIX-The Heppner Gaiette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, April 16. 1981 County-wide spelling contest rules announced The Morrow County School District has announced the following rules for participa tion in the 1981 spelling contest. The Morrow County, district -wide spelling contest will be held at Irrigon at Columbia Junior High School on Thurs day, May 14, at 7:30 p.m. AH contestants and specta tors are to report to the cafetorium for instructions. Three divisional contests will be held in the following locations: Division I - (Elementary to grade 6) library; Division II - (Grades 7 to Rebekah district meet held By DELPHI A JONES The Rebekah district meet ing was held on Saturday, April 11, at the Oddfellow Hall in Heppner with SanSouci Lodge in charge and district Chairman Donna Fortenberry presiding.. The meeting was opened by the host lodge with the Noble Grand Pete McMurtry in the chair. At this time the State Assembly President Vivian Roome and her Marshals Jan Gregory were introduced by the introduction committee of Delpha Jones. Hilda Yocom and Ruth Bergstrom. ; The host lodge relinquished the chairs to the following convention officers: Chair man Donna Fortenberry, Vice chairman Vera Reitman. Kefreshemenis will be serv ed to the contestants and spectators in the cafeteria at the end of the contest while the results are being determined. A tribute to the Bible was then given by San Souci with Opal Cook and Gladys VanWinkle in charge. Following the business of opening. Holly was in charge of the memorial with Hilda Yocom. Gladys VanWinkle and Delpha Jones in the tribute. At this time the group enjoyed a lovely salad lunch eon with coffee, tea and punch. After the short recess Bunchgrass had a tribute to High-octane rock groups combine at EOSC concert Two high-octane groups will combine to give a ma jor rock concert Wednesday. April 22. at the Eastern Oregon State College Quinn Coliseum. The 9 p.m. event features the five member band Head East and guest group Lion. "This is an out-and-out no-holds-barred rock 'n roll concert." said Student Activ ities Director Yvonne Tagge. who noted already impressive early ticket sales. The school lists of contest words should not be used for practice beforehand. They should be used only when the students are involved in the actual school contests. Schools may provide award certificates to school contest winners as appropriate. The State Department of Educa tion will furnish first, second, and third place certificates for the district -wide winners of each division. 4-H Marine workshop deadline set April 20 Young people visiting the Oregon Coast who attend the HW1 4-H Marine Science wnrkshonp won't have to wonder what they're seeing - after five days of intensive instruction about the state's marine resources, points our John Nnrdheim. Morrow County Extension agent. Dates for the workshop are June 1" - 20. the same time that other 4-H Week activities are taking place at the Oregon Slate University campus in Corvallis Costs for the marine science program are $75 per delegate. The event is open to 4-H leaders on a space available basis. Part of the total cost of the workshop is underwritten by a grant from the Federal Car tridge Corportaiton Persons interested in atten ding the workshop must apply by April 20. Nordheim stres ses. May 2. The bus plans to leuve Heppner from the museum at 7 a.m. to Lexington, hoping to leave there about 7 : :10 a m. The bus will then travel to Raker where they will be met by a member of the Historical Society at the Chamher of Commerce building. They will show slides, take the group to see several older houses (not inside) and other points of interest . Then it is on to the Methodist church where the ladies there are planning a lunch of stew and hot biscuits for $2.50. Then the group will travel on to Sumpter where arrange ments have been made to board the train at 2 p.m. for a short ride. This is optional for Parks to open soon The Dept. of Public Works has announced that Cutsforth and Anson Wright parks will be opened on April 22. Campsites will be on a first-come-first-served basis. They will then see a gold dredge and then go on to Haines. Ore., to the museum. A B:30 dinner is planned at the steak house in Haines. The travelers will order from the menu there and each is on his own. Following a leisurely din ner, the group -will motor home. To save time, please send your fare to either Ruth McCabe or Delpha Jones before boarding the bus. That way time will be saved, as the group will be anxious to get started. If you are not able to go and have signed up for the trip please let the ladies know as there is a waiting list.
