Hl Power, teamwork pay off for HHS By ANDREW GORMAN Power from the bat and mental team work payed off for the Heppner High baseball team in a final rematch with the Riverside Pirates. The Mustangs took a victory over Boardman. 5 to 4. The game lasted seven innings - and what an exciting game for Jay Hayes, who hit a home run, and John Murray and John Bier, who made a double play. Murray, as shortstop, picked up a ground ball, touched second, and threw the ball to John Bier, who was on first. In the top of the first inning as Riverside was up to bat Mike McKenzie hit the ball to the pitcher. Bier. Bier made the throw to first, with Murray tagging the base for the first out. Next. Cimmiotti hit the ball to right field for a double. Larry Wilson hit the ball to Bier who made the throw to first and caused the second out. Bjaze vich, 5th on the order, out with three strikes, brought the inning to a close, walk to first base. Rick Cole who was on deck stepped into the hole (against the plate) and hit a ground ball to the Boardman shortstop. The Pir ate shortstop made the throw to their firstbaseman for the first out for Heppner. Doug Holland, third in the order, took a single. Murray stuck out for the second out. For Ken Stookey. (designated hitter) for Jeff Orr. the first two pitches were strikes and the third was a wild pitch. The catcher missed the ball and Bier made it in home for Heppner's first run. On the fourth pitch Stookey connec ted. The ball was caught by the left fielder for the last out for Heppner. Boardman's first baseman Derik Trumbull was up to bat first as one ball and one strike . went by him. "Choke and poke" yelled Riversides coach, and that he did. but luckily for Heppner he hit a fly ball which fell into the glove of Doug Holland for the first out. Hutler was up and took a third called strike for the second. Earnest then took the first pitch and hit a fly ball to the left fielder. Heppner was up once again, and Hayes took one ball and two strikes. On the next pitch he took a bit of the ball for a single. Harry Groshens, seventh in the order for Heppner made a sacrifice (bunted the ball so that the other runner could advance). Greg Connor walked and Bruce Way took a single. Riverside got Connor out on second, making the second out. Bier, up once again, took the first pitch and got a single getting Hayes in home. Cole took the second pitch which went right to the pitcher who threw him out at first base. Riverside went into the dugout to start the top of the 4th. Iighton took one ball and two strikes. On the fourth pitch he connected and hit it to third baseman. Cole. Cole threw him out at first. McKenzie. first in order but taking the second pitch, pop ped a fly to the center fielder (Hayes) who caught it. Cim moitti walked and Wilson struck our for the third our for Riverside. In the bottom of the third. Holland took the bat and made a hot grounder to the second baseman who threw him out at first. Murray, batting clean up, hit the ball to the pitcher who also threw the runner out al first. Stookey. fifth in the order, took two strikes and hit a grounder to the shortstop who threw him out at first for three up and three down. In the top of the fourth the action really began. Mike Blazing struck out and B jaze vich hit a fly ball to the center field (Hayes). Trumble also struckout for three up and three down again. The bottom of the fourth was in the bag for Heppner as 6th on the order was Jay Hayes who took the first pitch and hit the ball over the right field fence for a home run. This did indeed bother Boardman's pitcher Larry Wilson for the next three pitches were balls. Wilson, third in the order, claimed a single, giving Riverside a run. Blazing got on base because of an error of right fielder Connor who missed the catch. Bjazevieh hit a fly ball to shortstop Holland, which brought the bottom of the fifth Heppner was in control now for Holland was up. He hit the ball to the second baseman and was thrown out at first Murrav struck out. Slookev and Hayes got on with a fielders choice. Groshens hit a ground hall to the shortstop who threw him out at first for the second out In the top of the sixth Trumbull struck out. Previa claimed the onlv double of the game and then Stevens made a fly ball to Orr for the second nut. I,oighton. was ninth in the order, and got a base on halls. McKenzie then made a flv hall 10 Cole for the last out. As Heppner was up. Wav was out at first and Bier got on at first. Cole also out at first, gave Riverside one last chance to make it. Heppner Heppner won one of three games and finished third in the four-team Wahtonka Invit ational high school baseball tournament in The Dalles Saturday. The Mustangs opened the day with an 8-0 loss to tourney champion Wahtnnka. defeated Pilot Rock 5-4. and lost to Riverside 9-8 in nine innings. The host Eagles finished with a 3-0 record. Riverside. 2-1. Heppner. 1-2. and Pilot Rock. 0-3. Wahtonka is ranked first and Riverside seventh in state class A baseball rankings. Heppner managed only one hit against Wahtonka. a first inning single by Doug Holland. The Eagles erupted for six runs in the third inning off Heppner starting pitcher John Bier on three hits, two walks, and an error. My MK'HFI.I.K I.ARl'F. On Saturday. April 11. the Cardinal thinclads traveled to Umatilla for the Morrow County Invitational track meet. The Cards fared very well in between the intermittent rain fall and the gusty winds. The Card boys finished fifth out of 15 schools with 5fi points. The Cardinal girls tied for eighth out of Ifi schools with 20 points. First places for the lone teams were won by Gregg Rietmann in the 100 meters with a time of 12:05. and Margaret Doherty in the 4in meters with a time of 6.1.78. Second places were achiev ed by Jim McCahe in the 4(tn meters in 55.07. Rietmann in the 2(H) meters in 23 9. and Card JVs downed in rerun with Pirates By MK'HFI.I.K I.ARl'F On Friday. April 10. the Card basehallers traveled to Boardman for a return shot at the Pirates junior varsity. The Pirates scored 14 runs on six hits, to down the Cards. 14-3. Scoring for the Cards were Jeff Hams. Jerry McEI ligott. and Scott Barnett. The Cards got two hits, a double by Craig Gutierrez and a single bv Jeff Hams. Cards open 1981 season with loss By MICIIFI.I.F I.ARl'F The Cardinal baseball team opened their 1981 season against the Riverside Junior Varsity at home on Tuesday, April 7. with a 7-3 loss. Scoring for the Cards was Scott Balfe with a solo home run in the first inning, and Les Thompson and Craig Gutier rez in the fifth inning. Getting hits for the Cards besides the wins 1, finishes 3rd Bier's double scored Harry Groshens. who had walked, and Cole sent Bier home for the winning run with a drive to right-center field. The Mustangs ripped 13 hits in the win. led by Ken Slookey's 3-for-4 plate perfor mance. Bier and Cole were each 2-for-5. Holland was 2-fnr-4. and Jay Haves was 2-for-3 in the win. Holland got the win on the mound, going the entire seven innings and allowing five hits. He walked seven and struck nut 14 batters The Mustangs got down 2-0. hut came hack with a run in the third when Holland scored on Hayes' single. Heppner gave up another run in the third to the Rockets, but battled back with three runs in the fifth on consecutive singles by Stookey. Hayes. Groshens. The lone Cardinal girls and boys track teams traveled to Umatilla Tuesday. April 7. for a five-way meet with Umatil la. StanlV'ld. Riverside and Heppner. Although no team scores were kept, the Cardinal boys scored 60 points. Placing for the boys were Dennv Starr second in the discus with a throw of lorn", third in the javelin with a Mirow of 1317". and fourth in the Win meters in 2 :t(l.(i: Howard Ieavitt fourth in 100 invitational Doherty in the 2(H) meters in 27.41. Third places were obtained by Denny Starr in the discus with a lifetime best of lin'9'j and Shawn LaRue in the high jump at 5'4". A fourth place ribbon was won by Craig Hams in the long jump with a best ever of R'. A fifth place was scored by Doherty in the girls' long jump with a leap of I4'5'." A sixth place went to LaRue In the high hurdles with a personal best of 18.42. The 400-meter relay team, composed of Rietmann. Mc Cahe. Treve Peterson, and Howard Iavitt. placed third with a time of 47.6R. The Ifioo-meler relav team, com posed of Rietmann. Hams. McCahe and Peterson, placed second in 3:45.24. Ieighton again recorded the victory for Riverside, giving up three runs on two hits, and striking out ten Card hitters Thompson took the loss Riving up six hits and striking nut seven. This week the Cards will travel to Heppner on Tuesday for a 4 p. m . encounter with the Mustangs, and then will tackle the Wahtnnka Eagles in a double header in lone on Friday at 2 p.m. home run by Balfe were Jeff Hams. Rich Ladd and Gutier rez all with singles. Card pitchers ls Thomp son and Craig Gutierrez gave up 13 hits while striking out eight. Seven strike-outs were recorded by Thompson who gave up ten hits in three innings of work. Leighton went the distance for Riverside giving up four hits and striking nut eight errors to the Pirates' one to lose it in extra innings. Riverside won it in the ninth when Dave Butler reached first on a hit-bv-pitch and scored on an error. The Pirates' I-erry Wilson added another run by reaching first on an error and scoring on a ground ball. Heppner fell behind 6-1 after two innings, hut scored six runs in the third inning on eight hits. Bier singled and Cole doubled to start off the inning and both scored on Holland's single. After Stookey singled. Hayes sing led in a run. Groshens singled, and Mark Way and Connor had RBI singles to complete the scoring. Riverside scored an unearn ed run in the sixth inning to send the game into extras John Murray went the first five innings on the mound for Heppner. scattering seven hits and allowing only two earned runs. The win put Barber's team in the championship against lone (12-2). The time and date Heppner High golf team competes in 3-way match at McNary The Heppner High School golf team competed in a three-way match with river side and Umatilla at McNary this past week. Competing were three var sity boys' teams and two varsity girls' teams.
