DMV celebrates first
year in Heppner
Motor Vehicle Division celebrated its first-year anniver
sary in Heppner on Jan. 14, Gene Murty, manager, has
proudly announce.
Murty recalls opening the state office with a desk,
telephone and a pile of cardboard boxes. Being one of the
more remote offices in Oregon, Murty says it was soley his
responsibility to build the office to what it is today.
Heppncr's DMV office, which is located on Main Street,
was preceded by a mobile van in 1979. The van traveled to
Heppner and other smaller communities, visiting a day at a
time. Because of bad weather conditions, however the van
was often unable to make the journey. And. according to
Murty, the mobile van was very expensive to run.

Gene Murty
Gene Murty is now a permanent state employee in
Heppner. He recently was given an opportunity for
advancement which would move him out of the area. He said
he has decided to stay. In fact, this reporter personally
witnessed Murty give his state promotion papers a
back-hand toss into the trash.
The Motor Vehicles Division is open in Heppner from 8
a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except on legal holidays and the third
Wednesday of every month. On that day Murty pays
alternate visits to Fossil and Condon.
