Member of the Heppner FFA Chapter have been busy
parlclpating in fair and contest at the local, county, and
state level. Ten members from Heppner recently
participated in the District Leadership Skills Contest held in
Pendleton. Greg Sweeney served as chairman for Heppner's
Parliamentary Procedure Team. Other team members were
Jeff Bailey, Tony Currln, Herman Winter, Anne VanSchoiack
and Don King father. Participating as alternates were: Shane
Laughlin, Bruce Way. Pat Schwarts. and Dean Rill.
Dean also represented Heppner in the FFA Creed Speaking
Contest. Heppner placed fourth in both contests. These
contests are designed to help FFA members to further
develop the skills that they have learned in the Vo-Ag
classroom and through work on their own supervised
projects.
In addition to the competitive activities FFA members
participate in many other activities, for example,
conventions. This year three members attended the National
FFA Convention in Kansas City. Missouri. Jeff Bailey, Don
Klndafather, and Anne VanSchoiack made the 1796 mile bus
trip to take pari ia the annual FFA Convention This spring
approximately ten FFA members from Heppner will Join
some 1.500 members at the State FFA Convention to be held
in Albany, Ore. At this meeting members will help elect the
new state officers for the coming year. They will also observe
or participate in the final competition in many of the contest
areas.
At the convention the State Farmer degree will be
awarded. Only around three percent of the total state
membership qualify for the honor. To get the State Farmer
degree a member must have earned 1500 on a project or have
worked (00 hours on work experience. It also requires
completion of two years of FFA and active membership
throughout. (Freshmen FFA members qualify for Green
Hand and tw-year members can qualify for Chapter
Farmer.)
The Heppner FFA Chapter consists of 37 active members.
Officers for iMO-81 are Jeff Alley, president; Don
Kindsfather. vke'president; Anne Van Schoiack, secretary;
Terry Gray, treasurer; Tara Mahoney, reporter; and Tony
Currln. sentinel. Roger Records Is the FFA advisor and
Vo-Ag instructor.
The Heppner FFA Chapter gives Its sincere thanks to all
the people who have supported our activities In any way. We
hope to continue these activities and add more in the future
because we feel that they are an Important part of our
education.
"This gives us a chance to thank the community," added
Mr. Record. "The community has been really good to us."
Other FFA activities coming up include a district-shop
skills contest to be held at Heppner on April 22. Around
250-300 district members will come from chapters In
I-ma pine, Milton-Free water, Athena, Pendleton, Hermiston,
Boardman and Condon, as well as lieppner, to compete for
awards.
