First Christian 'Cherry Pie Social9 Sun.
An old fashioned "Cherry
Pic Social" has been planned
for Pel). 22 (Washington's
birlhday, of course) at the
First Christian Church in
Heppner.
The purpose of the 5 p.m.
social, which is to be held in
the church basement, is to
draw the congregation to
gether, to unite and help
bridge the gap between the
youlh and adult members,
says Pastor Don Shelton.
As a social attraction the
young people (under thirty)
and the older members (over
thirty) will compete against
each other in ping pong and
shuffle board games.
Cherry pies, baked by the
men of the congregation will
be judged by the church
women.

Historical Soc. Sumpter
tour plans undertvay
Plans are now underway for
a Historical Society bus tour to
Sumpter, Ore. on May 2.
A ride on the Sumpter
Valley (narrow gage) railroad
is planned for the tour.
Anyone interested in the

The tour is expected to cost
in the neighborhood of $15.
If you want to enroll in the
correspondence course, "You,
Your Child and Food." the
deadline is Friday, February
20, reports Extension home
economist Molly Saul.
This three-lesson course is
designed for parents of preschool-age
children or other
persons who work with young
children. Information is in
cluded on the nutritional needs
of children and ways to
develop good eating habits.
Handling problem eaters will
be discussed, as well as
nutritious snacks for children.
The course includes three
lessons mailed from the Pen
dleton Extension office every
two weeks. There are short
assignments to be completed
at the end of each lesson.
These will be reviewed by
Mrs. Saul, and a summary
prepared. This summary will
allow participants to learn
from the experiences of
others.
There is a $1 fee to cover the
cost of postage and necessary
supplies. No grades or credit
are given for the course, but
each participant will receive a
certificate of completion from
Oregon State University,
Mrs. Saul states that the
first assignment will be
mailed March 4.
The Umatilla County Red
Cross is sponsoring lis second
annual International Wine and
Food Festival, Saturday,
March 7, from 4 to 9 p.m.' at
the Pendleton Armory.
Booths are being reserved
at this time by organizations
and individuals to sell their
specialty food samples that
are traditionally served in
countries throughout the
world. Some of the delicacies
to be served are Oriental
foods, fruit kehobN. Swedish
mt'Htbiills, chili, and ginnt
cookies. The wine will be Hold
by two Pendleton distributors,
