January 22, t8l Sifting through the TIMESJ Fifty Years Ago The banquet and party held at the Parish House at the culmination of the recent American Legion member ship contest was attended bv 120 Legionnaires and their ladies and Auxiliary members and escorts. Hie banquet prepared and served by mem bers of the losing team was followed by a short musical and speaking program. The musical program fea tured Miss Charlotte Woods, Harvey Miller and Miss Helen Falconer. Speeches were , given by C.W. Smith, district commander, and by S.E. Notson, district attorney. The annual librarian's re port shows that 2,238 books were circulated in the past six months. The report read by Mrs. Arthur McAtee revealed that the library association here now owns 800 books and currently has 149 borrowed from the state library. It was announced that maintenance of the library will be largely provided this year by a grant of $250 provided by the city. Mrs. Lucy Rogers, board president, announced the fol , lowing committee personnel: finance, Walter Moore, Mrs. Dick Wells, C.W. Smith; maintenance, Jasper Craw ford, Mrs. Jesse Turner, Mrs. W.O. All prices F.O.B., Detroit, Michigan. Twenty-Five Years Ago Morrow County became the first beef county in Eastern Oregon to receive a modified, certified Brucellosis-free rat ing when Dr. A. G. Beagle, agriculture research service, Portland, presented the county with its certificate at the annual banquet of the Morrow County Livestock Growers Association at the fair pavilion last Saturday night. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Anderson were presented the "Cattlemen of the Year trophy by Herman Oliver, John Day, past president of the Oregon Cattlemen's Association. County road crews have completed widening and re placing old timber under passes on nearly a mile of the lower Willow Creek Road in preparation for surfacing and oiling approximately six miles of the road this coming summer, Garnet Barratt, county judge, said this week. New officers of the county Livestock Growers Associa tion are Gerald Swaggart, treasurer, N.C.Anderson, sec retary, William Barratt, vice president, and John Graves, president. Raymond French is the outgoing president. 4-H leaders from this county will be among the four hundred estimated to attend the annual 4-H leaders' confer ence which will be held at Oregon Satate College, Jan uary 25, 26 and 27. Members of the Bookworms met Tuesday night and were guests of Miss Leta Humph reys at the Star Theater. They enjoyed seeing the musical "Brigadoon," taken from the book of the same name which had been reviewed by Miss Humphreys earlier in the year. Members attending were Mrs. Jack Flug, Mrs. W.E. Hughes, Mrs. Cornett Green, Mrs. J.O. Turner, Mrs. James Thomson, Mrs. Harry Dinges, Miss Humphreys, Mrs. Fred Parrish. Hiss Lulu Hager, Mrs. Ted Smith, Mrs. Floyd Jones and Mrs. Lucy Peter son. Refreshments were ser ved at the home of Mrs. Jack Flug after the show. Five Years Ago The membership of the Soroptimist International of Heppner will present an aquariun in honor of Dr. L. D. Tibbies to the Pioneer Mem orial Hospital Nursing Home. Four men charged with butchering a bull on Boeing land last week were arraigned in Justice Court Thursday on charges of theft in the first degree. They were bound over to the grand jury and taken to jail in lieu of bail. The annual stockholders meeting of the Federal Land Bank Association, Pendleton, was held at the Indian Hills Motor Inn, Jan. 14. Re-elected to three-year terms on the bonrd of directors were Milton Morgan, lone, and Richard Wilkinson, Heppner. Marlon Abrams. June Field and Justine Weatherford spent most of Saturday. Jan. 17, In Pendleton with other library people at n workshop at HMCC. Umutilla County Librarian John Swltzer ar ranged an interesting and educational program for the school and public librarians from Umatilla and Morrow Counties.
