The first quarter was a high scorer as the Mustangs pulled out In the lead with six buckets and one foul shot. The VlklngR were close behind with five lone girls lose to Honkers by by Michelle l.altue The lone varsity girls hosted the Arlington Honkers on Friday, January 16. The Cardinals were defeated, 32 to 39. Fillies beat Weston McEwen, 45 - by Sherry Cowett The game against the Wes ton McF.wen was won by the Fillies, 45 30 High point scorer was Mary Kincaid with 16 points. Twelve points were made by Kellie Hammond. Fourteen re bounds for Margaret Kincaid Fillies break near tie by Sherry Cowett During the Filly game against Umatilla there, the scores were close to being tied throughout the game, but the Fillies pulled ahead and won. 48-35. lone varsity loses to Honkers, 46 to 49 by Michelle La Hue The lone Varsity boys played Arlington on their home floor on Friday. Jnn. 16. The Cards were defeated by only three points. 40-49. The Cards took the lead in the first quarter, 107, they held on to their lead and increased it to 23-18 at the half. The Honkers got their mom entum up at the half as they came out to score 18 points in the third quarter and look the lead. 32 36. In the last quarter, the Cards made their move but couldn't quite pull It off. The Honkers went home with a 46-49 victory. The Cards out rebounded the Honkers by one board, Inconsistency Inconsistency continued to plague the Heppner junior varsity boys basketball team last weekend. Heppner captured its fourth straight win at home Friday night by defeating a tough Weston-McEwen, 41-39, but lost its fourth in a row on the road Saturday, a 50-48 deci sion to Umatilla. Heppner, 4-4 on the season, played at Condon Tuesday. It was just Umatilla's second win in eight games this season. Heppner's Mike Currin sank two free throws with 20 seconds left in the game against Weston-McEwen to give the Mustangs a 40-38 lead. Currih's fifth foul gave the Tiger-Scots two free throws with 10 seconds left, but Weston could convert just one of the two and Heppner grabbed the rebound. The Mustangs' Greg Connor sank a free throw with no time remaining to make it a two-point winning margin. Both teams committed an excessive number of fouls, but Heppner won it at the free throw line by hitting 17 of 30 shots. The Mustangs had 20 fouls and Weston-McEwen, 24. Heppner was led by Connor with 14 points and 19 rebounds. He also led Coach Brent Eggers' rating system with a 14 rating. Currin scored 9 points, Jeff field goals and 3 free throw shots. At the end of the quarter the score was floppner, IS, to Umatilla, 111. In second quarter action, the Mustangs were still in control of the game and hud an edge of a lead with nine gnats and five foul shots. Heppner came back to take a two-point lend in the fourth quarter, but it was short-lived as Umatilla pre vailed. Connor and Orr scored 12 points. Groshens. 10, Currin 8, Andy Samples, 4. and Clark, 2. Connor .and Groshens finished with a 414 rating. Orr grabbed nine rebounds, and Currin and Connor snared eight apiece. Once again the Mustangs got in foul trouble and hit just 6 of 17 shots from the charity stripe themselves. "It's a shame the great effort we had Friday night against Weston had to be overshadowed by a horrible performance against Umatilla the next night." said Engers. "It's puzzling to me how we can play so well at home and so poorly on the road. The Umatilla game was our worst performance of the season. We lost because we weren't ready to play at the start of the game. It's hard to get men tally into the game .he last three quarters if you aren't ready at the start." The Blue Devils came back to take the lead at the half as they scored 23 points to make the score 28 33 at the half. The Cardinals came out after half to even it up, 45-45. at the end of the third quarter. The last quarter was low scoring, with both teams playing tight defense. The Cards were outscored. 60, with seven of the Blue-Devils points coming on free-throws. did the best job of screening out on the boards that I've seen all year. Matt Chirk came off the bench to give us a lift Friday night. Saturday was just a case ol some poor Allstott deflates Schwab 71-42 The duo of Ken Grieb and Mike Stookey combined for 40 points to lead Dave Allstott 's team to a 71-42 win over Les Schwab in Heppner men's city league basketball play Sunday night. Grieb scored 24 points. Stookey. 22. and Allstott, 13. in the landslide win. Tom Point er fired in 14 points and Steve Peck, 10, for the losers. In other games, lone defeat ed Mike Smith's team, 42-22: Don Barber's team blasted Dick Devin's team, 64-35: and Brent Eggers' team edged Rick Johnston's team, 49-42. Third game of season brings another defeat for Heppner Mustangs by Andrew Gorman On Friday, Jan. 16, the third season game of the year brought another defeat for the Heppner Mustangs. Mistakes were a big factor in the Mustang loss. The first quarter went off like a missile for the Weston McEwen Tiger-Scots, as their quick start gave them a four point lead within the first couple minutes. The third quarter was an exhausting one for the players - one minute they were on offence, and the next they, were on defence.
