David and April Hilton Sykes, Publishers Letters to Be a little kinder To the Editor: Many times when we take time to write a letter it is to voice a concern, disagree ment, or to complain about an issue. We also take so many things for granted. If a business, or individual, or government service, such as schools, post office, police, fire department, hospital, neighborhood center goofs up, we are quick to criticize. Hardly anybody ever says "thank you," for teaching our kids, getting our mail on time, keeping our city safe, our fire department going, helping tc get the sick well, and helping people when they are without. Does anyone say "Thank Open hearts to e To the Editor: Many teachers have been calling our office wondering if they or their students can do anything to help the relief operation for the Italian earthquake victims. We have contacted the Italian counsel to find out exactly what is needed and what is the best procedure to insure speedy aid. The most serious and im mediate need is for money to buy medicines, vaccines, wa ter purifiers, and generators. An account has been set up at the First National Bank of Oregon, and deposits may be made through any branch. Checks and money orders What's your opinion? "I think pretty much the same as last year. I haven't bought as much, but I've spent pretty much the same." Programs set at lone, Heppner The Christmas program for Heppner grades five through 12 has been scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the high school gymnasium. The band and chorus will be under the direction of Don Boyce and Kitty Coon. No admission will be charged, however, donations will be accepted. Remember that Santa will do his best to bring the things you ask for, but sometimes he just can't bring everything in his bag. Obituary Raymond J. Huddleston Raymond J. Huddleston, 72, of 43(H) Green Meadow Drive, Meridian, Idaho, died Mon day, Dec. 1. at his home. Services were conducted Thursday, Dec. 4. at 2 p.m. at Cloverdale Funeral Home, Boise, by Boise Masonic Lodge No. 2. Interment was in Terrace Lawn Memorial Gar dens, Boise. Mr. Huddleston was born Oct. 2, 1908. in Lonerock, Ore., to Ray and Alice May Weller Huddleston. He graduated from Grant High School in Portland in 1927. He attended the University of Oregon. In May 1929, he moved to Valdez. Alaska, where he worked for the Alaska Road Commission. He married Lorene Jeanette Turner on Feb. 9. 1938. He later worked for the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads and the Alaska Department of Highways, where he retired as Valdez district superintendent of maintenance in 1971. They Thomas R Marlatt Thomas R. Marlatt. 85. died in Heppner, Friday. Dec. 5. He was born in Heppner on Jan. 30. 1895. the son of Thomas and Melissa Hart Marlatt. and was a lifetime resident of the community. A veteran of World war I. he was a retired mill worker. Funeral services were held Wednesday. Dec. 10. at 11 a.m. at the Sweeney Mortuary Chapel, with Bishop Malcolm Skinner of the Hermiston Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints officiating. Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Cook sang "Bevond The Sunset" and "In Clarice Otzenberger Graveside services were held recently in Hermiston for Clarice Otzenberger, who passed away at Good Shep herd Hospital. Mrs. Otzenbe-ger had been a former Lexington resident for several years, moving to Stanfield about 22 years ago. She was born jn Idaho Springs, Colo.. June 19. 1915. She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and the Holly Rebekah Lodge of Lexington. Surviving are her husband, Memorial scholarship fund set up for Board man music teacher The Eastern Oregon State College Foundation has estab lished the Richard L. Mr. Huddleston is survived by his wife, of Meridian; three daughters, Lorene Sloper of Salem, Alice Rae Bergdoll of Juneau. Alaska, and Sally Robertson, Boise, Idaho; a brother, William N. of Her miston; three sisters, Mrs. Ruth Fletcher, Ukiah, Ore., Mrs. Sadie Parrish, Heppner, and Mrs. Elinor DeBok of Pilot Rock; and five grand children. Bill Wag ner, Wesley Marlatt Jr., Morris McCarl, and Ray Papineau. Mr. Marlatt is survived by his wife. Sally, Heppner; two sons. Wesley and Ralph, both of Heppner; a daughter, Frances, Red Bluff, Calif.. 16 grandchildren, four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Lloyd. Stanfield; a daughter, Inez Frost. Hermiston; sis ters. Pauline Korticus, Denver, Colo., Edith Moore, Scotts Bluff, Neb., and Maxine Eastwood, Seattle, Wash.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Memorials may be made to the Oregon Fund of the Seventh-day Adventist Church or the cancer fund. Attending the services from Lexington were Mr. and Mrs. Dean Hunt. Mr. and Mrs. C.C.
