Range tour slated in Morrow County
In this time of political
unrest abroad and threatened
massive energy shortages,
energy consumers should be
aware of the energy alternat
ives available to them.
On Thursday, Nov. 13, the
Heppner-Ione branch of the
American Association of
University Women will spon
sor an Energy Fair which will
answer some critical energy
questions and expose the
public to ways to harness
potentially available energy
sources.
Participating in the 7:30
p.m. program will be: David
Burns. East Oregon Solar
Group, who will speak on solar
energy; Rod Aho, Bonneville
Power Administration, whose
topic is wind power : and Gene
Rietmann, lone, who will
speak on windmills in Morrow
County.
Also participating will be
Harry Kennison, Kinzua
Corp., who will speak on a
wood waste generating plant;
Corrine Lindsay. Lexington,
whose topic is gasohol and
other alcohol fuels: John
Nordheim. Morrow County
Extension Service, who will
speak on water power; and
Paul Sumner of the Columbia
Basin Electric Co-op. who will
present ideas on conservation.
Each participant will speak .
for ten minutes, after which
will be a refreshment period.
During the refreshment
break, the public will be
invited to write questions for
the speakers to answer. Fol
lowing the refreshment per
iod, the questions will be
addressed to the speakers.
The program will be held at
the multi purpose room of
Heppner Elementary School.
A range tour covering parts
of southern Morrow County is
planned for this Saturday,
Nov. 15. reports John P.
Nordheim. Morrow County
Extension agent.
The tour will include range
fertilizer plots, terraces, for
est thinning and reseeding of
grasses, range seeding of
former wheat ground, water
for upland birds, and discus
sion on the potential of an
unimproved site.
Anyone interested should
bring a sack lunch and a
pickup, if possible. Partici
pants can meet at 7:30 a.m. at
the Extension office in Hepp
ner. or at 7:45 a.m. at
Hardman, to pool rides.
Special guest speakers will
include Tom Bedell, Exten
sion Rangoland Resources
specialist from Oregon State
University; Bill Myers, SCS
Range conservationist, Bob
Krein. State Fish and Wild
life; and Stuart Otto, State
Department of Forestry.
Speakers will be available to
answer questions. The first
stop is at Phil and Louis
Carlson's place above Rock
Creek, The tour should be
finished around 1:30 p.m.
