Saturday's opening round
Class A state football playoff
game at Elgin will mark the
sixth appearance for the
Heppner Mustangs. It also is
the third consecutive year for
post -season action.
The HHS gridders will be
out to break a jinx that has
plagued them throughout their
playoff historythe Mustangs
have never advanced beyond
the quarter-final round of
action.
Last year Heppner won its
first football playoff game
with a 54-6 victory over Lost
River. This was the first year
of the expanded 16-team series
and Heppner lost to St. Mary's
of Medford. 14-6. in a hard
fought quarter-final game.
Heppner first appeared in
Class A playoffs in 1948 and .
lost to Union by a single
touchdown in a game played
in a mud bath.
It was not until 1970 that the
Mustangs returned to post
season play and dropped a 50-6
decision to Pine-Eagle, a team
that also dashed the local
gridders' hopes of a state
championship in 1974. 19-7.
Elgin, this Saturday's foe,
dropped Heppner, 25-6. in 1978.
Six starters from this year's
eleven were members of that .

receivers for the Cards are
Treve Peterson who has
caught five touchdown passes,
and Jim McCabe.
Defensively the Cards run a
basic 4-2 in running situations
and a 4-1 in obvious passing
situations.
The Cards' strengths seem
to be their running attack, of
fensively, and their defense
against the rush. Another
strength is the play-off exper
ience of the Cards, who have
won back-to-back state cham
pionships the last two years.
The Cards' weakness may
be their passing game which
they have not used too much
this year because of their
strong rushing attack.
Coach Meyers sees the
teams as equals with no clear
favorite to win. Winner of the

Should Heppner emerge
victorious Saturday, the Mus
tangs would host Corbett next
weekend at Heppner in anoth

chance to break the jinx.
But first the local gridders
must get by Elgin. What must
they do to win? "We have to

Both teams enter the contest

Heppner fans were troubled
last Friday night as starting
quarterback John Bier was
