Question of the week: "Do you think the media
(television, radio, newspapers) handled the election well?
"No," says Lorraine Ladd. lone. "I couldn't believe the
polls they (the media) reported on. I'd like to know who they
polled. It's amazing how they could have gone so far wrong
and have it end up the way it did.
"They were also too anxious to emphasize all the
slanderous remarks about the candidates. The media played
it up. It wasn't only for the presidential candidates, but for
the congressional ones as well."

Recent research has indent
ed that common worries.
conflicts, fears, and frustra
tions are often due to habits of
thinking that we sometimes
fall into. I call these non-productive
habits of thinking
"mental ruts" because they
are often paths to unhappi
ness. Several of these mental
ruts are listed below, and you
are invited to examine your
own thinking for these kinds of
thoughts.
1. You should never make,
mistakes.
2. Life ought to be good to
people who are honest and
hard-working.
3. You should never get
anxious or upset over any
thing. 4. Most people do not have
any control over their habits
and therefore can't change
them.
5. It is necessary to get very
upset over some things-es-pecially
those that don't go the
way you want them to.
6. Generally there is only a
right and a wrong way to do
things, and it's terrible when
people don't do things the

right way.
7. II you make a mistake in
one area of life, you are
prohahly incompetent in other
areas too.
8. If you don't accomplish at
least one thing every day, you
aren't, worth very much.
9. There are generally two
kinds of people in the world:
those who live up to their
responsibilities and those who
shirk them.
10. If other people are upset
with you. there must be
something wrong with you.
11. Other people can moke
us either happy or very upset.
12. If things have gone badly
for a person in the past, they
will probably continue to go
badly.
13. You should strive to
avoid pain and discomfort at
all costs.
All of us likely have
thoughts like these from time
to time, but if you hold any of
these thoughts very strongly
you may be in danger of
falling into a mental rut which
can make life miserable. One
way to check for yourself
about your own mental ruts is
to go back over the statements
you endorsed and recall the
situations where you think of
them and feelings you get in
those situations. If the feelings
are negative ones like anger,
fear, worry, or frustation, you
may be in a mental rut.
In future articles I shall
discuss each of these thinking
habits in detail and show how
they can cause problems.
