Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, November 6, 1!W0 CLA IED AB 15caword ( 1 0-word minimum ) 6769 228J Pomona Grange discusses wheat exports, election by Delpha Jones A most interesting and educational talk was the highlight of the Wheatland Pomona District No. 29 meet ing, concerning the market of wheat exports from the US and the need for enlarging Bonneville Dam locks. Donald Thompson, president of the Oreeon Wheat league was present to explain these two problems, which are upper most in the minds of farmers and consumers at present. One solution to the problems discussed was foreign market, especially with China, which, it is hoped will be in operation within the next four years. The locks at Bonneville Dam are not large enough to accomodate the traffic - of wheat bargts on the Columbia River. The locks of the other dams on the Columbia and Snake are large enough to take care of the traffic but the barges are held up at Bonne ville. Letters are being sent to congressmen, the Corps of Engineers and others to try and get this needed project underway. At the best it will take two to six years to realize anything from this. The Pomona grange drafted a resolution to this effect. The resolution committee was Dorris Graves, Donald Thompson and Vernon Root. The meeting was presided over by the Master, Rolland Johnson of Rufus Grange. The distinguished guests received and escorted to the master's station were Donald Thomp son, and the Oregon State Grange deputy Ralph Fenton and wife. There were good reports received from the members and officers of the grange with all reporting that granges are working in helping the granges and communities. The CWA chairman report ed that Clara Huston won a blue ribbon on a doily and that Marilyn Bergstrom won a red ribbon on a luncheon cloth at the recent needlework judging. Kinzua Corp. buys three timber sales Kinzua Corporation of Heppner was the successful bidder on three lodgepole salvage sales on the Heppner Ranger District of the Umatil la National Forest. The Suffering L.P. Fiber wood Salvage Sale, which had an appraisal value of $14,133., was sold on Aug. 20, to Kinzua Corporation in oral auction for $14,703. Forest Recovery was the unsuccessful bidder. They have a small log mill at the Port of Umatilla. On Oct. 14, the Sugar Daddy Fiberwood Salvage Sale was 'sold at oral auction. The appraised value was $24,624. Wagon Trail Cookies 4-H Club formed The Wagon Trail Cookies cooking club was recently formed with Kathleen Brazell, ' Beth and Paula Heatherly, Nancy Taylor and Carrie Nance as members and Mrs. . Al Brazell, leader. Paula Heatherly was elect ed president with Carrie Nance, vice-president and Nancy Taylor as secretary-reporter. The club will meet every first and third Monday after school. She. like most of those present, says she is tired of the mud slinging we see and hear on the radio and T.V. She also brought out that the news media have a great deal to do with the election, and to listen to them with an open mind. Vernon Root, also of the Legislative Committee, talked on the measures and told how most of the grangers felt on particular measures and how the state grange would sug gest that grangers vote. Mr. Weimer had a few words for the grange, saying that the US must stay united as a government, or some other form of government will step in and take over. Greenfield Grange had a degree day Nov. 2 and the Master, Art White, invited all to attend. Greenfield Grange will host the Pomona meeting Jan. 31 and at the same time the Pomona Degree will be given. Ralph Fention, state deputy told the group that he and his wife are moving back to their home in Portland because of business reasons, and that he will not be a deputy for this area any longer. He will continue to work with the grange in any capacity that he can. He reminded us that the National master is a granger, owning property in the state of Nebraska and he feels that he will have the farmers prob lems as his concerns and will do all that he can to help with this. The meeting adjourned with the group practising for the 5th degree. Kinzua Corporation was the successful purchaser with a bid of $42,750. Louisiana Pacific Corporation was the second highest bidder. The Jackpot L.P. Fiberwood Salvage Sale was sold on Oct. 15. This sale was appraised at $4,947 and sold to Kinzua Corporation for $9,720. Forest Recovery was the second highest bidder. On Oct. 21. the Elkhorn L.P. Fiberwood Salvage Sale was purchased by Louisiana Pacific Corporation for a high bid of $47,450. This sale was appraised at $6,279. Kinzua Corporation was the second highest bidder. members cooked a frankfur- ter supper. Paula and Kath leen gave reports on the four food groups and Nancy and Carrie gave reports on clean up and preparation for cook ing. At the second meeting members learned about mak ing puddings, measuring liquid and dry ingredients, and the cost of homemade vs prepared mixes. The next meeting will be Nov. 17.
