May 1. 198ft NINE 0 Currin, Steagall lead Heppner rodeo club to team title atRufus Heppner's rodeo club won the loam trophy April 26 and 27 nt high school rodeo in Rufus with Tony Currin win ning the Iwiys all-around competition and Jnna Steagall tying for the girls all-around title. Currin was third in the steer wrestling, second in the calf roping, and first in the team roping with partner Cliff Dougherty, Steagall was first in the breakaway roping, third in the pole twriding, fifth in the barrel racing, sixth in the goat tying and tnth in the cutting. Joedv Marlatt was third in the calf roping and ninth in the steer wrestling. Af Rice was second in the saddle hronc riding. Heppner scored four runs in Sophomore's pitching, hitting lead Mustangs to 7-1 win over Sherman Sophomore Doug Holland went two for three at the plate and teamed with John Bier to pitch a combined four hitter to lead lb' Heppner baseball team to a 7 I win against Sherman last week One of Holland's hits was a two run homer in the sixth inning with Bier on base on a Single. Holland had three RBI in the game. Heppner scored one run in the first when Bier walked and moved around the bases on two lielder's choice plays and scored on an error. The big inning for Heppner was the second when the Mustangs scored four runs on three walks and base hits by Harrv Groshens, John Murray NOTICIC TO WII.I OW CKKKK IRRIGATORS Morrow County Court requests all water rights holders on Willow Creek to meet at Morrow County Grain Growers conference room on May !ilh at N p.m. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss rehabilitating the Smith Ditch which diverts water from Ditch Creek to the headwaters of Willow Creek. Smith Ditch water right is held by Morrow County with a use permit from the U.S. Forest Service for the benefit of all water right holders of record on the creek and is allocated proportionately. Steve Marlatt and new member Jack McGuire from Board man. The high school rodeo club has been working on several projects to raise funds to help to pay for its trip to the state finals. One of the projects was ticket drawing for some beef. Winners of the beef were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Kennison of Heppner and Ken Bailey of Pendleton. The club would like to thank all the people who bought tickets for the drawing. pal Chuck Starr. Stan said To prevent it. wear a good cushion shoe and avoid running downhill on hard surfaces txt-ause that causes lower leg pain on impact. Hepner is first in the West Division of the Columbia Basin League with a 3-0 record Wasco and Wahtonka are lied for second at 2 1. Sherman is 1-3 and Condon 0-3. and Dale Holland, who had two hits in the contest. Bier started the game and pitched four innings walking two and striking out four. Doug Holland relieved for the final three innings, strike out none and walked four. Both pitchers gave up to two hits. Sherman's only run came in the sixth inning and it was Ione's boys track team won two track meets last week as the team prepares itself for the District 7-A track meet at Umatilla May 9 and 10. The Cardinals combined with the girls team to win the Arlington Invitational track meet Saturday with 352 team points. Dufur was second with 206. Arlington third at 194. Antelope, cougar or sheep hunting deadline May 5 The deadline for application to hunt antelope, cougar or bighorn sheep in Oregon this fall is approaching. Applica tions must have a postmark or be submitted to the Portland office of the Fish and Wildlife Department no later than May 5 to be entered in the May 22 drawing. Printed application instruc tions and controlled hunt application cards are now available from stores that sell hunting and fishing licenses throughout the state. He was one over par both rounds shooting two 31 's. Heppner had a team score of 278. Riverside had 3(H) and Umatilla only had three golf ers so it did not have a team score. Hepp Willow Creek golf directors announce $15 rate for May The Board of Directors of the Willow Creek Country Club had its regular monthly meeting April 21. The main topics of discus sion were plans to establish an underground sprinkler system at the golf course and the annual membership drive. President Elmer Palmer will appoint a committee to investigate engineering and financing for a new watering . system. , Again this year, prospective new members can take advan tage of a special introductory ' rate for the month of May. Individuals may play during May for $15. Persons wishing to join the club may deduct this fee from the total cost of membership (either indivi dual or family). . A membershipcommitteeof Elmer Palmer.
