January 17. 1980-FIVE Van Marter, Lankford now 4-0 Jim Lankford's team and Laverne Van Marter's squad remained unbeaten with wins last Sunday in the Heppner City Basketball League. Lankford's team beat Steve Powell's squad 69-43. Dave McLachlan scored 20 points. Dave Allstott 19 and Lankford 14 for the winners and Bill Meyers led the losing team with 13. Roger Britt's team beat Les Schwab 49-43 but had to forfeit the game because it did not supply any referees for the next game. Jay Coil scored 11 and Dick Devin 12 for Britt's team and Les Schwab was led by Tom Pointer with 16 and Steve Rhea with 12. Don Barber's team edged Rick Johnston's squad 52-50. The balanced scoring for the winners had Barber with 11, Dave Eckman had 12, Mike Rowell 11 and Will Jones 10. Gary Van Arsdale scored 23 and Tim Adams 14 for Johnston. Van Marter's team won 68-43 over Mike Smith's team . Van Marter scored 18, Mark Huddleston 13 and Dirk Dun lop 10 for the winners and Ron Green scored 11 and Mickey Sharp 10 for the losing team. Games this Sunday will match Barber (2-2) and Po well (2-2) at 5 p.m., Smith (2-2) and Johnston (1-3) at 6. Van Marter (4-0) and Britt (0-4) at 7, and Les Schwab (1-3) against Lankford (4-0) in the final 8 p.m. contest. All the captains are asked to attend an organizational meeting at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. Fillies romp over Riverside Pirates The Heppner Fillies girls basketball team smashed the Riverside Pirates 57-32 in Boardman last Saturday. Heppner never trailed as the team jumped out to a 14-1 first quarter lead as Alice Abrams and Deann Connor hit the boards and Lynn Dee Devin Bowling Sparetimer's League Coast-to-Coast won the first half of the bowling season in the Sparetimer's League after winning all four games in a roll-off match with the Mor row County Grain Growers. The two teams tied for first place after the regular half of the season so the teams bowled against each other to determine the champion. The second half of the season started last week with Sears, who finished last at the end of the first half, winning all four of its games and is in first place with a 4-0 record. Coast-to-Coast, Petersons and Gardners all are 3-1 and tied for second place. The Morrow County Grain Grow ers. Jerry's Mobil and Central Market are 1-3 and Bucknums is 0-4. Karen Palmer bowled the high game of the week with a 202. Fran Cook had the high series with a 515. Coast-to-Coast had the high scratch team game with 793 and the high scratch team series with 2.243. After Coast-to-Coast in the total pins standings is Peter sons with 2,080 and M.C.G.G. with 2.070. Jerry's Mobil is fourth with 1.905 and Sears fifth with 1,859. Bucknums is sixth with 1,800, Central Mar ket next with 1,742 and Gardners last with 1,355. Keglers League Fran Cook rolled a 227 game and had a 579 series to lead the bowlers in the Koffee Kup Keglers League. The Three Holers had the high team game with a 615 and the high team series with 1,768 pins. Betty Brown made the 3-5-10 split, Betty Snow the 5-8-10, Maude Hughes the 6-7, Hilda Yocum the 4-7-10 and LaRae Kindle the 3-7. The Pytts lead the league with a 4912-22,2 record follow ed by the Three L's at 45-27. The Hi Ho's team is third with a 39-33 mark and the weary wives team is fourth at 38-34 and the Gutter Dusters are also 38-34. The Three Holers have a 30-42 record and the Dregs are at 27-45. The Newcomers are last with a 21 '2-50' '2 mark. The weary wives team is first in total pins with 28,283 with the Three L's second with 28,176 and the Pytts third with 28.102. The Gutter Dusters are fourth with 27,820 and the Three Holers fifth at 27,663. The Hi Ho's team is sixth with 27,357 and the Newcomers seventh with 27,253 and the Dregs team is last in total pins with 27.253 !' . Riverside showed a fast break of its own in the second period as the Pirates came back to make it 18-12 with two minutes remaining in the half. Heppner turnovers, much like Riverside's in the first quart er, aided the comeback. But Abrams got an offensive rebound and swished it in to make it 20-12 and Geri Grieb scored a basket on an offen sive rebound and another on an outside shot to make it 24-12 at halftime. Devin scored on a fastbreak with an assist from Mary Kin caid to open the scoring in the second half. The outside shooting by Karen Harding kept Riverside in the game until Heppner ran off eight straight points near the end of the third period. Grieb scored on another fastbreak and an outside shot, Connor scored on an offensive rebound and Mary Kincaid made two baskets to make the score 45-18 at the end of three quarters. The last period was a comedy of errors as neither team could hold onto the ball. The Pirates did not block out Heppner on the offensive boards as Greib and Sandra Ward both scored easy lay-ins after getting offensive re bounds. Lottie Laughlin ended the scoring with 20 seconds left in the game as she drove the length of the court and scored on a lay-in. Kincaid led Heppner with 13 points. Grieb had 10, Devin . and Abrams 8. Connor 7, Ward 4. Margaret Kincaid 3, Laugh lin 2 and Cindy Bowman 2. Harding led Riverside with 15 points, mostly on outside shots of 10 feet or more. lone horse rider receives state award Anne Murray of lone was the rider of her aunt and uncle's horse. Harris Tweed, that was awarded the 1979 high point trophy by the Oregon Horseman's Associa tion at their annual convention at the Holiday Inn at Wilson ville, Ore. Harris Tweed was the champion junior working hun ter. The horse won the trophy for scoring the most points in the jumping classes for the events for the entire year. Harris Tweed is owned by Russell and Joanne Shook of the Buck Heavens Farms in Hilisboro, Ore. The horpe also was the amateur high point working hunter for 1979 for the North west Horse Council. He is a registered Appaloosa. Pilot Rock comes to Heppner Friday The Heppner Mustangs will take on two of the tougher teams in the league this weekend as Pilot Rock comes to town tomorrow night and the Mustang basketball team travels to Weston-McEwen Saturday night at 8. Heppner lost to Riverside in Roardman last Saturday 57-45. Riverside was led by 6-foot -4 Larry Wilson with 16 points. Stacy Coleman with 12 points and 5-foot-7 Scott Daniels with 10 points. The Pirates' leading scorer. Steve Daulton. was held to only 7 points by Heppner's John Bier. Jim Parker led Heppner with 16 points. Doug Holland had 12. Dale Holland scored 10 points and Curt Day 7. Dale Holland also had 10 rebounds. Heppner shot 37 percent from the field, 20-nf-54 and Riverside shot 54 percent from the field. 25-of-46. Heppner outrebounded the home team 30 to 28. Wiison was the dominating factor in the game as he forced Heppner to shoot from the outside. Everytime Hepp ner could gel inside. Wilson would reject the shot. Heppner led at the end of the first quarter when Parker hit a 35-foot shot at the buzzer to lead 14-12. The lead continued to chan ge hands in the second period in the see-saw game with Heppner still hitting an amaz intf percentage of its shots from the outside and River side going to its inside game with Coleman and Wilson. Heppner led 26-22 on two top of the key jump shots by Doug Holland but Riverside ran off eitrhl straight points to lead at halftime 30-26. Parker had 14 points at halftime and Wilson led Ri verside with 8 points. Heppner stayed within stri king distance in the third period after Dale Holland drove the length of the court and scored a lay-in to make it 40-37 hut Riverside scored the last two baskets to lead 44-37 ai Die end of three quarters. Parker scored his only basket of the second half with four minutes left in the game to make the score 48-41 but lone Cardinals play Echo, Arlington The lone Cardinals will take on Echo tomorrow night at home and Arlington Saturday night in an away game. The JV play at 4:30 p.m. with the girls and boys varsities following. lone did not have any games last week because of snow. Coach Del LaRue said Echo is led by its 6-foot-2 center Joe Ramos who is a "good outside shooter " Their other leading scorer is little Todd Rohde who is a senior guard. LaRue expects Saturday's game against Arlington to be much tougher since Arlington beat Echo last week 89-56. "It should be one of our closer league games," he said. "They are about the same size as us. with their tallest player 6-1. They are quick and play good'D'. They are young with no starters back from last season although several of the players did play varsity ball." LaRue expects Mike Proc tor, "who is a good shooter" to cause some problems for the Cardinal roundballers. Proc tor scored 17 in last week's game. He also said McCauley and Cloy Bittinger are good players for Arlington. As for the lay-off because of the snow cancellations last week. LaRue does not know if that will hurt his team or not. "We were just starting to play well together," he said. "We needed to play but I hope our momentum will carry us through." Coach LaRue said he is in a good situation because he has a lot of players performing well. He plans on starting Mark Patton at center. Dennis Slefani and Treve Peterson at the guard spots but he is not sure what he is going to do about the forward positions. Robin LaRue is playing after sitting out the first half of the season with a football injury. "The doctor told him his knee is as good as ever and he doesn't even have to wear a brace like he thought he was going to have to for about six months." the head coach said. The other forwards fighting it out for a starting spot are Shawn LaRue, Jim McCabe and Gregg Rietmann. "I am comfortable with all four forwards." LaRue said. "I am in a good situation because I can rest people and use the press most of the game to wear our opponents down. We are really gelling good plav from our bench." Riverside stalled the last two minutes of the game with the four-corners style offense and Heppner was forced to foul. Riverside made 7-of-ll free throws in the game and won by 12 points. Coach Dale Holland said the team played good man-to-man defense against the quicker Pirate team and the Mustangs will have to play good defense this weekend to beat two of the toughlest teams in the league.
