October 18. 1979- Heppner blanks Wahtonka to retain lead t W . -ami Action at the Heppner High School junior varsity game Monday night team losing to Wahtonka 14-0. saw the Mustang Heppner's Mustangs shut out Wahtonka 35-0 in an away football game last Friday. Quarterback John Bier had his best game of the season as he passed for 158 yards and three touchdowns. He hit on 10- of-15 passes. Heppner's first score came on a 47-yard pass play from Bier to Dale Holland. Jim Parker kicked the first of the five extra points he made during the game. Tailback John Murray scored on a 19-yard run in the first quarter and an 11-yard run in the second period as the Mustangs led at halftime 21-0. Bier tossed a 5-yard pass for a TD to Holland and an 11- yard pass to reserve tail back Chris Zita for another score in the third period. The fourth quarter was scoreless. "They left the middle wide open with their defense and the pass was so open that we couldn't resist," Heppner Coach John Sporseen said. Murray ran the ball for 127 yards on 14 carries for an average of 8.9 yards per carry. Cliff Dougherty, in a substitute role, ran the ball for 70 yards on 11 carries for a 6.4 average. The Mustangs had more than 400 yards in total offense while Wahtonka had 101 yards. Heppner had 17 first downs compared to four for Wahton ka. Six of the first downs were from running and 11 from passing while Wahtonka had two rushing and one passing. Heppner ran the ball 45 times for 255 yards while Wahtonka ran the ball 25 times for 70 yards. In total yardage, Heppner had 413 yards on 60 plays for a 6.9 yards per play average while the Eagles had 40 plays for 101 yards for a 2.5 yards per play average. Heppner did fumble three times, losing one, and the team did have more penalties than Wahtonka as 55 yards were walked off against the Mustangs. Parker led the defense with 16 defensive points. He had five assisted tackles, three solo tackles and one blocked kick. Sporseen's defensive points are awarded for an assisted tackle (one point), an unassis ted tackle (two points), a tackle ' for a loss (three points), a fumble recovery or an interception (four points), a blocked kick (five points) and a defensive touchdown (six points.) continued on page 9 Bowling Sparetimer's League Healy,Mahoney excel in local rodeo meet Janice Healy and Tara Mahoney were standouts at th' recent Harry Noble Jack pot Rodeo. Healy won the open barrels, the open poles and the steer dobbing competition on the first day and the open poles competition the second day. She also came in second place in the breakaway roping event on the first day and got two seconds in the open barrels and breakaway roping on the second day. Mahoney placed first in the junior barrels and second in the novice barrels on the first day and she placed first in both the novice and junior barrels the second day and fourth in the open barrels. Trisha Mahoney was second in the junior barrels, second in the open poles and second in the steer dobbing the first day and she was second in the junior barrels the second day. Kathleen Van Schoiack was fourth in the poles and Anne Van Schoiack was third in the poles and fourth in the novice barrels. Lawrence Rice placed in the saddle bronc competition and Rocky Steagall placed in the bull riding event. Also competing from Mor row County in the rodeo were Sheri Brock, Cindy Dough erty, Jerry Gentry, Mary Daly, Tim Daly, Ron Currin, Neil Beamer, Shirley Beamer, Walt Coffman and Kelly Keene. Also competing were Shawn and Randy Britt. Libby Britt was second in the peewee barrel racing event Sunday. After the rodeo Saturday, a benefit auction was held for Ed Hollowell, who was injured in an auto accident earlier this year. Cardinals shut out Dufur 36-0 by Teena I.indstrom The lone Cardinals srnashed the Dufur Rangers 36-0 at Dufur Oct. 13. Gregg Rietmann started off the scoring in the first quarter with a five-yard run for six points. The extra point at tempt failed. In the second quarter, Dennis Stefani broke loose for a 68-yard touchdown run. Stefani then passed to Treve Riverside beats lone in volleyball match The lone Cardinals, coached by Barbara Stefani and Ve nessa Thew, lost to Riverside Oct. 9 in the Pirates' gym. The varsity team won the first game easily 15-1 and it looked like an easy win for the Cards but Riverside came back in the second contest to win just as easily 15-1 . The two teams battled it out in the third and final game of the match but Riverside came out on top 15-12. The JV team lost its first game 16-13 but came back to win the second 16-13 and lost another close game in the finale 16-14. The varsity squad also lost to Sherman Oct. 1 1 in another away match. Sherman won the first game 15-6 and the second 15-fi so there was no need for a third game. The junior varsity also lost in two games 15-9 and 15-11. Peterson for the extra point and lone led 14-0 at halftime. The third touchdown of the game came when Rietmann stepped in from two yards out. Again Stefani passed to Peter son for the extra-point. The next touchdown came on a pass from Stefani to Peterson but the point after touchdown pass attempt failed. The third quarter was scoreless but the Cards made one last touchdown in the fourth period. Stefani was in on this score also as he hit Rietmann on a 67-yard pass play for six points. Once again. Stefani hit Peterson on the extra point try and lone won 35-0. - "Their defense shut down our running game a little, but in order to do that, they exposed themselves to the passing game." Coach Gordon Meyers said. "We still were able to move the ball, but not as consistently as usual. "I feel we got a good game out of our three interior players, Terry Starr, Jerry Rietmann and Glen Krebs. Our ends were doing a good job of catching the ball and running their patterns. "Defensively, I felt we did a good job in stopping them. They moved the ball only between the 20-yard lines," Coach Meyers continued. "We got a good effort out of Shawn LaRue and our linebackers did a great job. The halfbacks were also filling the holes well. Overall, a real good, strong effort was made." Dufur star Bill Meade, before the lone game, had 336 total yards and eight touch downs but the Cardinals held him to no touchdowns and 117 yards. Kay Roberts bowled an even 200 game for the high game of the week in the Sparetimer's League. She also had the high series with a 519 and Fran Crook rolled a 510. Coast-to-Coast had the high team game with a 793 and the high team series with 2,260. But Coast-to-Coast is still in second place to the Morrow County Grain Growers team. The M.C.G.G. team has an record and Coast to Coast is second, one game back, with a 17'v-6'2 mark. Still in third place is Petersons at 16-8 and Central Market is fourth with a 12-12 record. Jerry's Mobil is 10-14, Bucknums is 9'2-14V2, Gard ners is 7V2-1612 and Sears is last at 5-19. Coast-to-Coast is first in total pins at 12,943 and Petersons is second at 12,665. M.C.G.G. is third at 12,300 and Central Market fourth at 11,549. Bucknums is fifth at 10,868 and Jerry's Mobil next at 10,035. Sears has knocked down 9,950 total pins this season and Gardners are last at 9,582. Fran Crook picked up the 5-10 split, Liz Cowan the 6-7 split and Verna Brinda and Sherry Oglesbee were suc cessful on the 5-7 split. Koffee Kup League Iris Campbell was the star of the Koffee Kup Kegler League this week as she bowled a 201 game and a 499 series. The first place team after the sixth week of play is the Three L's with a 17-7 record. The team also is the first in total pins with 9,662. The Pytts are in second place with a 16-8 mark and 9,638 total pins. The Gutter Dusters are third with a lVi-0,2 record but are fifth in total pins with 9,176. The Gutter Dusters did have a good week as they shot the high team game with a 596 and the high team series with a 1667. In fourth place is the Hi Ho team with an even 12-12 mark but they are seventh in total pins with 9,128. The Newcom ers are in fifth place with a 104-13' 2 record but they have knoed down the third most pins with 9.328. The Weary Wives and the Three Holers are tied for sixth with 10-14 records. The Weary Wives are sixth in total pins with 9,154 and the Three Holers are last with 9,090. The Dregs have managed to knock down 9,240 pins for fourth place but their winning percentage is low with a 7-17 record so they are in last place. I jxt I a. I STORE L.
