Storage Headquarters in lone to com pose arrangements from dried materials they had collected on a field trip in August. Loree Hubbard was hostess for the meeting during which Jean Nelson's birthday was celebrated with a buttermilk, chocolate short cake made by Pat Pettyjohn. lone couple return from Alaska Mr. and Mrs. Milton Mor gan, lone, recently returned from a 14-day tour of Alaska sponsored by Successful Farming magazine. The trip included a motor coach tour of the interior from Anchorage to Whitehorse, Y.T., via Mt. McKinley Na tional Park and Fairbanks; a narrow-guage train ride along the storied gold rush route to Skagway; and a scenic cruise through Alaska's Inside Pas sage with stops in Juneau, Glacier Bay and Sitka. They also inspected farms in the Matanuska Valley, near An chorage, and in the Fairbanks area. VFW slates fall meeting at Pendleton The fall meeting of District No. 8, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary, Depart ment of Oregon, will beheld in Pendleton at the VFW Hall Saturday, Oct. 20, at 8 p.m. A Lunch will be served following the meeting. State VFW Commander Koe Nishimotoof Hood River and State President Helen Guthrie of Enterprise will attend. They will speak about the various programs of national and department organiza tions. Otis L. Umphres of Echo, district commander, and Mary Burke of Echo, district president, will conduct the meetings. 5 roads in Ukiah district closed Forest Supervisor, Herb Randoph of Umatilla National Forest, has issued a closure order restricting motorized vehicle use on five forest roads, in the Butcherknife area on the Ukiah Ranger District. The closure order prohibits the use at any time of the year for vehicles over 40 inches in width on the affected roads. Potential hunters and visi tors should check with local Forest Service offices for further details. Lock traffic restricted The navigation lock at John Day Dam is open to traffic on a temporarily limited night schedule until tomorrow while anchor cables that stabilize the upstream floating guide wall are repaired, the Army Corps of Engineers has an nounced. Until Friday, the navigation lock will be open between 4 p.m. and 8 a.m. on weekdays, and all weekend. Closure of the lock this week was coordinated by the corps with i !i:.k force representing commercial shipping inter ests, to allow replacement of deteriorating cables which keep the floating guidewall aligned with the navigation lock. President Delta Huber con ducted a business meeting and the Sept. 23 flower show was reviewed by co-chairman Helen Martin. Rides for mem bers planning to attend the district meeting in Pendleton were arranged. The skit which will be presented by the lone Club at that meeting was rehearsed. Special guests of the club were Carol McKaig and Shar- leen Arends of lone and Linda Nance, of Lexington. The November meeting will be held at the country home of Ruth McCabe. The program topic which will be presented by member Nancy Miller will be "The Advantages of Com binations of Plants for Pest Control."
