Hep pner High School volleyball team exciting to watch Bodies were flying all over, knees were getting bruised, there was hard hitting, good passing and precision team work. No it was not a football game. F'ans have come to expect this type of action at a football game. What it was, surprisingly, was a women's volleyball game. Having never attended a Heppner beats Wahtonka easily The Heppner women's vol leyball team won its second game in league play to raise its record to 2-0 and tie Condon for first place by beating Wahtonka. Heppner won the first game 15-8 and the second game 15-3. Geri Grieb was the leading server in the match with 10 service .points. high school women's volley ball game. 1 expected a much more timid contest. But there was nothing timid about it. The Heppner High School women's volleyball team was playing last year's league champ, Condon, and both teams would seemingly do anything to accomplish its goal of winning the match. The Condon team is big and experienced. There was no doubt about that. The team which lost only one player from its championship squad last year, played like the champs they are in the first game against Heppner last Thursday as they over whelmed the underdogs 15-4. The hard serves and big front line of the Condon team proved to be too much for the smaller Heppner squad. But the spirited Heppner group was determined not to give up. The Mustangs led 9-6 in the second game when the Condon team's experience began to show and Heppner fell behind 11 9. But Heppner came back as the team dove for every ball and Condon seemed awed at the way the Heppner team kept coming at them. The more than 100 people in the audience began stomping their feet and the Mustang bench came alive and the noise that size of crowd was making was unbelievable. Condon went ahead 13-11, Heppner tied it at 13-13, Condon led 14-13. Heppner tied it at 14-14. Heppner pulled ahead 15-14 but Condon came back and tied it at 15-15. Heppner then won the serve and Kellie Hammond aced the champs on two smashing serves and David had beaten Goliath again, this time 17-15. The big upset, though, was not to be. Condon a big lead in the third and final game of the match and the emotionally drained Heppner team could not fight back long enough as they lost 15-7. "We played exceptionally well." coach Sheri Brock said. "But the serving was not good in the first and last games so we didn't get many points." Alice Abrams was high server in the contest with seven. The junior varsity team. coached by Karen Howe, was the only Heppner team to beat Condon. Condon took a big advan tage in the match by winning the first game 15-11 in a see-saw battle. Coach Howe then platooned in another team in the second game of the match. This team kept the ball in play and let Condon make the mistakes and the JV team won handily 15-5. In the third game. Heppner jumped out to an 8-0 lead with alert teamwork but Mustang mistakes let Condon come back to 8-5. Heppner then won the serve and led 13-5 but Condon would not play dead and they came back to within two points at 13-11. Heppner finally won the game and the match winning 15-11. While most coaches say they like a big turn-out for a sport, large numbers hurt Heppner in the "C" team's game. Condon dones not have as lone volley bailers on losing streak By Kelly A. Pettyjohn The lone Cardinal volleyball team played the Wahtonka Eagles last Thursday at 5 p.m . in The Dalles at Watonka High School. The Cardinals J.V. team, under the coaching of Barbara Stefani and Venessa Thew, defeated the Eagles' Fresh man by a score of 15-8 and 15-2. Coach Barbara Stefani said "It was an excellent game." Ione's J.V. team had to play five games Thursday because they don't have a freshmen team. The game between the Eagles J.V . team and lone s J.V. team was quite an exciting and close game. The score of the first game was Ione-2 and Wnhtonka-15. The second game score was Ione 16 and Wahtonka-14. and the third game was. Ione-1 and Wahtonka-15. Ione's varsity team as also defeated by Wahtonka with the first game score Ione-1 and Wahtonka-15. The second game score was Wahtonka-15 and Ione-4. The lone Cardinal varsity volleyball team also traveled to Echo last Saturday to an invitational volleyball tourna ment. The Cardinals played Helix first and were defeated, 0-15. The second game against Helix was, Helix-15 and Ione-1. The Cardinals then played Echo and were also defeated 15-0. The second was also lost 15-4. On Tuesday. September 18, lone came up against Sher man County in a swift, decisive volleyball battle at lone. The Cardinals seemed un prepared for the tough Sher man County Huskies as the scoresfSn high against lone. The Sherman Cnimtv riWv proved their volleyball skills with ace serves and hard spikes. Even though lone tried to play with the bump, set, spike routine, there weren't enough set-ups for any really good net plays. The J.V. team played well i.. the first game but couldn't seem to get under the ball during the second, while the opposite applied to the varisty team. The lone J.V.'s were de feated in the first game 13-15 and in the second, 8-15. The Varsity Inst both games 4-15 ;mH 10-15 many players on its volleyball team and therefore almost the entire JV team played against Heppner's "C" team. Hepp ner's young women had a lot of spirit but not much playing experience and the team from Condon won 15-2 and 15-1. Heppner was hurt by the lack of knowledge of volleyball by its players. They, like I, seemed to have trouble under standing the technicalities of the game like illegal substitu tions, serving etc. but know-, ledge comes with experience. Chaperone Mothers needed for homecoming Mothers of Heppner High School students who are willing to be chaperones for the homecoming dance Oct. 5 are invited to meet in the high school library at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27. The homecoming will be Friday, Oct. 5, starting at 4 p.m. with a parade through downtown Heppner. The football game at 8 p.m. will be between Heppner and Umatilla high schools. The dance in the high school cafetorium will follow the game. Linda Schultz bowls high game of week Linda Schlutz bowled a 206 to have high game for the week in the Koffee Kup Keglers League. The high series was rolled by Maureen Howard with a 542. The high team game and the high team series were rollerdby the Three L's with a 616 and a 1,746. The Three L's are leading the league with an 8-4 record. The Newcomers and the Pytts are tied for second place with identical 7-5 marks. The Three Holers and the Hi Ho's both have 6-6 records and the Weary Wives and the Gutter Dusters are at 5-7. The Dregs round out the league standings with a 4-8 record.
