Martha Doherty won the women's division of the 1979 Amateur Horseshoe Tournament Sunday at the Morrow County Fair with three victories, the first against Gladys Van Winkle shown at right, against Millie Rauch and Judy Lynch. Bleacher Seats With Robb Bush Well, it's official. 01' Bleacher Seats is going to be a no show. This is one aspect of being transferred that I really regret. Writing the column last year was a lot of fun, but it was relatively easy because of the outstanding young people involved in the Heppner and lone High School programs. This season would have been no different. I was really looking forward to another season appreciating the enthusiasm, drive, dedication and determination of Jody Marlatt. The Muskrat is a fine individual who works extremely hard to be a fine football player. If Jody continues to progress as he has in the past (and I am sure he will) he will take a heavy toll on the opposition this season. I expect to be able to follow his football life for some years after high school. The Bull and the Bear act will be back again this year. Jim Parker and Ray Miller are each a year older, wiser and stronger. They may put Coach Sporseen in a position where he will have to get permits just to let them on the field. These two are or can be as good as their heads will let them. They , have the tools. Coach, be sure Ray gets meat before game time. You can't be sure if he sees blood and hasn't eaten. I expect that the performance of Dale Holland and John Murray will be consistent with last year's efforts. Dale is a necessary, steadying influence and John is a sophomore running back who played like a senior when he was a freshman. John is going to draw a lot of attention from here on out. Following in the footsteps of Dennis Peck and Bryan Marlin (Bryan is another player I hope to be able to follow in college) is not an easy or enjoyable task. But Chris Zita has been patient ; now his turn has come. This kid wants to play football. Chris went to football camp this summer to help him prepare and gain some skills for this season. Chris, I like your attitude and I know you are going to make some major contributions to the Mustang success. What can you say about being Class A state champions? You can say it only lasts one year and it is a tough act to follow. The lone Cardinals are up to the task. The Cards were a young team last year and while losing a Kevin McCabe or Danny McElligott isn't easy, I believe the overall team strength will be up with another year under their belt. Dennis Stefani has as much poise, game sense and ability as any quarterback I have seen in high school football. But Dennis is not the whole team. Greg Rietmann is back and Greg would as soon run over someone as around them ; he makes the tackier pay. Total team effort is the symbol of the Cardinals, exemplified by Shawn and Robin LaRue, Terry Starr and my heavy hitters, Trcve Peterson and Glen Grebs, er Krebs. These last two guys play the game. Coach Myers hasn't told them that they really don't weigh 190 lbs. but that isn't important; what is, is the fact that they play like 190 and hit like 190 and think like 190. Maybe, they are after all. Like I said, I do regret not being here for this football season. It is going to be a good season and an exciting season. Don't you miss it. I am going to have to rely on M.M.Q. to keep me postedl will be following the teams, just not as close as I would like. 32 enter horseshoe pitching contest; Bob Harrison, Martha Doherty win Thirty-two horseshoe play ers entered the Second Annual Morrow County Fair Amateur Horseshoe Tournament Satur day and Sunday at the Fairgrounds.
