Tom paints 30 windows for Fair & Rodeo time A sure sign that rodeo and fair time has arrived in Heppner is the appearance of Big Tom Simon ton, Pendleton, painting his brush across the windows of the city. . Simonton arrived Wednes day to begin the task of painting rodeo and fair scenes on 30 merchant windows, using a different design and numerous message for each work of poster paint. A retired Postal Service worker, Simonton 's next job will be to start painting the windows of businesses in Pendleton for the Pendleton Roundup. He also paints windows in La Grande, The Dalles, at the Athena Cale donian Games and as far away as Hillsboro. Although wearing a neck brace and suffering from muscular dystrophy, Simon ton says he enjoys his work and talking with passersby who stop to admire his works of art. He says he has been painting for 33 years. Accord ing to a local source, Big Tom has hosted echange students and guests in the American Field Service, and Rotary Club programs and has re turned the visits to students in their native countries. The window painter doesn't use any set designs or patterns to follow, he simply paints his designs and ' leaves off a signature. Asked if he planned to attend the Heppner Fair and Rodeo, Simonton said no; he had to go back to Pendleton and start painting windows in that city to ready Umatilla County seat for the September Roundup. Each year Heppner windows come alive under the brush of Tom Simonton of Pendleton, depicting fair and rodeo scenes. A trip down Main Street to see the works of art is worthwhile travelling.
