TWELVE The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, July 26, 1979 4 4 J 1 'i ! 4 -! "I Dirt cheap9 furnace could save world's firewood fue. An Oregon State University professor has developed a dirt-cheap appliance that could conserve one half of the Third World's most common, but nevertheless, vanishing fuel firewood. Ianto Evans, assistant pro fessor of landscape architec ture, has designed a new type of stove out of sand, clay and water that burns 50 percent less firewood while emitting more heat than traditional methods. It costs less than $10 to make. Evans' stove, carved from a monolithic block composed of about 80 percent sand and 20 percent clay, is named "Lorena," a Spanish acronym for sand and clay. The stove was developed by Evans two years ago when he was involved in private re search in Guatemala. Further refinements were added this past year at OSU where Lorena was incorporated as a project of Evans "Appropri ate Technology" class. Explaining the reasons for Lorena's development, Evans says "more than 80 percent of the energy consumed in the Third World is in the form of wood burned for cooking. "From a forestry point of view, more than 80 percent of the timber harvested in Third World is used for firewood. Worldwide, more than twice as much timber finds its way under cooking pots than goes for furniture, export lumber, domestic buildings, forest fires and disease combined," Evans said. "In a lot of poor countries, 25 to 30 percent of household income is spent for firewood," Evans adds, "and in others, one household member is employed full-time just searching for wood. Because wood is the primary fuel used, there are increasing circles of deforestation occuring around villages and towns in most of these countries. The Lorena stove can save fuel, thus curbing deforesta tion and the resulting erosion, because it is very energy efficient, believes Evans. This efficiency is due to three factors : The stove has a high thermal mass; damper doors control the gas flow; and there is a high tempera ture of combustion because of Lorena's masonry construct ion. "The critical mixture of sand and clay has unique properties," says Evans. "It has great structural strength, a high thermal capacity and it is very easily worked. You can make adaptions merely by wetting it because it is a mechanical, not a chemical, bond." Because of its sand-clay construction, the stove is relatively low cost and it can be built with very little skill or special tools. "In Guatemala the stove has been built for the cost of a $5 chimney pipe, and in Indonesia the cost has been as little as $1.25," says Evans. "The stove needs no special tools to build. In fact, we make a special point of using only a shovel, a machete and a kitchen spoon in the construc tion. These are three tools even the poorest household will own." Lorena's construction peop erties also make the stove adaptable to different cul tures, fuel conditions, eleva tions and personal needs, according to its designer. "Aesthetically, a mud stove sounds rather squalid, but it takes whitewash well and we are experimenting with var nish and other finishes. In fact the stove can achieve great sculptural beauty. The forms are powerful and massive and will adapt to surface decora tive carving easily. Nobody has yet complained they look ugly." There are also health ad vantages associated with the stove. "A great majority of the world's people still cook over an open fire. This is obviously halation of smoke," says are the lot of most cooks in this ions, respiratory diseases, hands are common, and small With increase use o e very wasteful, and there is a Evans. country,' the cooks must ex- emphysema, bronchitis and children suffer horrible scalds stove in poor nations, ivvans tremendous health hazard "Apart from the steaming pect a shortened life.
