Sheriff Bauman 's Apprecia tion Day will be highlighted by a Sunday picnic at the Morrow County Fairgrounds, from 12:30 to 2 p.m., sponsored by the Heppner VFW Post and Auxiliary No. 4184, American Legion and Sheriff's Search and Rescue Posse. Beverly Launer, wife of Jim Launer, VFW Post Com mander, said the Post has been in contact with Bauman, Area wheat yield good but kernals small, dry The wheat harvest has started in Morrow County and according to Larry Mills, manager of the Morrow County Grain Growers, the earliest wheat is showing itself at the North Lexington Elevator. The North Lex Elevator is one of seven stations open from 7a.m. to 9 p.m. to handle the trucks filled with local grain. Eric Anderson of Earth Carpet was the first to turn in the results of his wheat harvest this year. So far, the wheat yield is good but Mills said the kernels have been found to be small and dritd int. When farmers bring their wheat to the elevators, samples are taken of the wheat and sent to a Washington State grain test ing laboratory in Pasco. Depending on market con ditions, the newiy-cut wheat will be trucked to railroads on the Columbia. Mills said wheat price looked fairly good Monday at $4.70 per bushel on the coast. Fuel supplies are tight for farmers this year but Mills hopes they may be able to get by. The county grain growers supply comes from Cenex. The fuel problems are not entirely caused by the nation al diesel shortage. Mills said some farm vehicles are pow , ered by gasoline. Greater volumes of wheat are expected later from the lone and Boardman areas.
