FOUR The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, June 14, 1979 Monday Morning Quarterback By Jim Old Bleacher Seats finally reacted to our sports column this week and I have to admit, the . Sonics represented the Western Conference well against the Washington Bullets. But I contend luck and good fortune play a strong role in athletic contests. For instance, look what happened in the Belmont Stakes over the weekend. The favored horse, Spectacular Bid, stepped on a safety pin before the race and placed third in the running by a dark horse. Sure, Spectacular Bid tried but the injury must have dampened some of his enthusiasm on the course. It was an interesting sports week to say the least. Larry Bird signed an unprecedented 3.25 million, five year contract with the Boston Celtics as rookie and he may be worth every penny. The Los Angeles Lakers were sold to another financial interest, (they will be stronger with Magic Johnson added to the staff) and Jimmy Connors was upset in tennis by a relatively unknown French tennis player, Victor Pecci, who was in turn deposed by the Swedish entry, Bjorn Borg. Please excuse my interest in sports world-wide but the television media is constantly focusing its coverage to include our leisure-time activities. Turn on the tube on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, you can see anything from international soccer, gymnastics to the invitational racquets championship. Escaping the video action is what most baseball fans do here locally when they come to Heppner Fairgrounds to witness the week's Little League contests. Instead of capturing the action from the bleachers, they enjoy the game via their cars and when the neighborhood favorite makes a base or scores, they honk their horns. There actually seems to be more audience participation and that may be healthier than being fed facts and figures from our TV sports dialogue. This week's bicycle rodeos are also considered a sports event when you think about the young bicyclists swarm ing over county streets and roads in the next ten years, bicycle safety programs are important in protecting them as well as guiding them in the rules of the road. Most adult cyclists are probably in need of safety programs as well, especially in bicycle touring and long distance, traveling. Now that I've thoroughly confused Old Bleacher Seats with my jump-around strategy, I would like to close by saying that the Morrow County School Board is expected to select a new basketball coach at their monthly session. Tom Day has , resigned the position. I, as well as the basketball team, know the person to be selected but you will have to wait for the official announcement.
