The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, Jim 7, 1979 NINE Weatherford enjoys homeland Justine Weatherford, Hep pner, the Gazette-Time's cor respondent, has returned from a six week tour of Europe with a fellow passenger, Inez Erwin. The pair traveled to England, France, Holland, West and East Germany. From her experience of being rushed out of the Louvre in Paris to her well guarded tour of East Germany, Justine says she enjoyed her travels and would like to return someday to West Germany where her mother's family lives, The pair arrived at Lon don's Heathrow Airport by 747 jet from Seattle April 18 and toured in the Isles for ten days, traveling to London's historic spots and on a special bus excursions to Canterbury, Oxford, Stratford, Warwick, Bath, Stone Henge, Dove;' and other sites in Southern England. Justine had the opportunity of riding England's famous "Tube", a mass transit subway which runs throughout London and double deck buses. If' , 1 v-zse-av ,Ji Xtrm Justine Weatherford "They use more mass transit in Britain than in Germany and France," she said, adding that, "all types of Londoners ride the Tube." She felt the English were more reserved than the West German population and less affluent. Another of her obser vations was the abundance of East Indian population in that country. For three days, Justine and her friend visited Paris, toured the Palace de Versail les, the cathedral of Notre Dame and viewed some of the world's greatest art treasures, the Mona Lisa, Winged Vic tory and Three Fates at the Louvre. ' They were unable to con tinue their tour through the Louvre because the guards Public UMATILLA ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE ASSOCIATION GIVES NOTICE THAT PAYMENTS ARE NOW AND HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE AT THE MAIN OFFICE OF UMATILLA ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE ASSOCIATION AT HERMISTON, OREGON TO THE PERSONS NAMES HEREUNDER OF MEMBERSHIP AND PAY MENTS WHICH HAVE BEEN AUTHORIZED FOR MORE THAN FIVE AND ONE HALF YEARS. Besides France, the pair flew to Frankfurt and on to Stuttgart where Inez's daughter and two sons met them and took them to Cooke Barracks at Goppingen where they stayed for the next two weeks. There, they visited Ulm on the Upper Danube and other attractions within a short distance. In a bus tour to Holland, they saw the Dutch country side at the peak of tulip time, visiting the world's largest flower market at Aalsmeer, a fishing village, the reclaimed land of the Zuider Zee, a wooden shoe factory and a cheese farm. Justine's main reason for visiting West Germany was to look up relatives and notes that she "finally made it," following former visits by her son, Bill and daughter, who had studied in Europe. "I loved Germany most. The people seemed friendlier and more affluent than those in England and France," she said. Staying with her family, the Kleinsorges, Justine was able to speak German from her language training at a class in Heppner last winter and from a German-English dictionary. She said Germans drive more than the English, mainly Audis, Mercedes and Volks wagens, are rebuilding many of their older buildings and modernizing their roads and freeways. Traveling the length of the country by German Rail, Justine said the train service is "terrific with comfortable compartments, big picture windows and reasonable prices." It cost her only $30 in American money to Notice 30, ,W9, THEY WILL BE ) V S RUSSELL N. DORRAN, MANAGER travel the length of the country. German television was im pressive to Justine who ex plained that the color was superb and the educational programming excellent; she attributed the quality to the greater number of color dots in the German technology. On her travels through Germany, Justine traveled to Heidelberg, north through Bonn, Koln and Hamm to Bielefeld, viewing rivers, castles and hillsides with terraced vineyards, visited the only church in the village of Sonneborn which was Catholic before the coming of Martin Luther, a 600 year-old structure. Unexpectedly, she traveled by tour bus through the Berlin Wall to East Germany for an hour -long bus tour. One of the German relatives was asked to ride the German-speaking bus while Justine was segra gated to the English-speaking transport. She wasn't allowed to carry a newspaper into the Communist zone by the East 61 1166 1170 1173 1180 1200 LOR IN J. BEACH EMI LEY ALLEN OLIVE ATTEBERRY 0. G. The high point was a visit to a Soviet War Memorial at a city park. An aspect normally over looked for tour buses in most democratic countries was the search of the undercarriage by German guards for anyone trying to escape to the West. "I went through Checkpoint Charlie which as pointed out by other tourists, is a bar," she said, "and the last chance to get a drink before entering East Germany." Justine described the Berlin Wall as a whitewashed wall covered with graffitti. She noted that a large part of pre-war Berlin is Communist-controlled. The East German guards were multi-lingual, Justine said, and were able to communicate with a Japanese scientist riding the bus. One of her relatives, Kurt Rahaus, is a prominent inter ior decorator in West Ger many and played host to her while in West Berlin. 1773 1774 1775 ' 1777 1801 1804 1805 1806 1809 1812 1814 1817 1819 1831 1833 1834 1835 1836 1838 1814 1844 1847 1849 1853 1854 1866 1869 2602 1879 1882 CLAUDE B. If I had my sentimental druthers, I would make West iGermany my first choice to Vive, then South England, then Holland, then France, and hopefully never, never East Germany." She has brought back sou venir coins from the variety of countries she visited from the pfenings and D marks of Germany to Holland's guild ers, and the francs of France with their liberty, equality and fraternity, plus cards, photo graphs of sites and people and the memories of her first trip to Europe. Justine said the restaurants of England and France were expensive ranging from $20 to $30 per night, gas was double U.S. prices. Staying with relatives helped her travel budgeting. 2033 C. A.
