KKJIIT The Gazette-Times. Ueppner, Oregon, Thursday, May 31, 197H County 4-H me in 'warm-up 9 3 3 1 judged horse show i i . 'V 1 K i V - "l ? i Morrow County 4-H mem bers had a "Warm-Up" Horse Show May 19 at the Heppner, Oregon fairgrounds. Ron Davis, Olex, was the judge of the day's activities. 4-H members from three clubs across the county were in attendance. Each member brought a smaal award to be used as class awards. The first class. Australian Pursuit Race, ended in a tie between Cindy Stroeber, Hep pner, and Theresa Lindsay, Lexington, members of the Two Trackers 4-H Horse Club. This class is basically a trotting race with penalties for breaking into either a walk or canter. Neither Stoeber nor Lindsay could overtake the other and Mr. Davis called the Scientists study sagebrush growth A study of soil and plant relationships in the vast western states' sagebrush eco system by scientists at Oregon State University will help find out how best to manage sagebrush for the wildlife that eats it. For cattle ranchers, the ideal way to manage sage brush is to remove it because cattle rarely eat it. However, wildlife such as deer and antelope do graze on it, so some species of sagebrush must remain. Volatile oils in sagebrush affect its palatabihty to wild life. Soil factors such as moisture, mineral content and fertility affect the quantity of oils in the various sagebrush subspecies. This research study will provide information on which subspecies will benefit wildlife on the soil of a given rangeland. The new know ledge will help guide ranchers' decisions about sagebrush subspecies to be cleared for cattle space and the sub species to be retained on the range for wildlife use. The study will be done under a cooperative agreement bet ween Oregon State University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The agreement calls for $60,000 to be spent on the two-year study with funds from the department's Science and Education Ad ministration (SEA). Plant ecologist Al Winward, Corvallis, will represent the university and range scientist Forrest A Sneva, Burns, Ore., will represent SUA. 17 lorse owners told; aecinate animals regon horse owners are being reminded by the Oregon Department of Agriculture of the need to vaccinate their animals against equine en cephalitis. Stitle Veterinarian Glenn B. Ilea said horses should be vacinated against the disease before the season for it to appear arrives. He said the stale has from one or two up to 14 or ir confirmed cases yearly, depending on the type of weather during the spring and summer months. The disease is more com mon during hot dry weather. H is transmitted by insects, especially mosquitoes. Birds, particularly pheasants and robin-;, are carriers. The disease can be transmitted to humans as well as horses. A combined vaccine is available that offers protec tion against three types of equine encephalitis eastern, western and Venezuelan. Fasierri and western types are more common and appear seasonally in many parts of the United Slates. However, Kea and the U.S. Department of Agriculture veterinarians lecommond that the vaccine covering the three types be used. They say that while there is no record of any cases of Venezuelan equine encephali tis in the U.S. since 1971 this type could reemerge at any time because it has several hosts other than horses. Equine encephalitis is often fatal to horses. Intially it may cause hyperactivity in horses, followed by abnormal drowsi ness, tremors, lack of coor dination and loss of weight. The animal may also chew excessively, have difficulty swallowing, show impaired vision and reduced reflexes and have an irregular gait. Meeting scheduled A special meeting of the Morrow County School Board has been set for Tuesday. May L'itat Riverside High School in Boardman.
