The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, May 31, 1979 THREE 1979 Award presentations and graduation speeches high lighted the commencement ceremony Saturday night of the 1979 graduating class of Heppner High School. Graduation speaker Scott McEwen, the class salutator ian thanked a variety of people for their service to the school, praised the school curriculum and spoke of the need to do more to recognize scholars. The class valedictorian, Bill Kenny, defined "success" and performed a song of his own creation entitled "Add What You Can to Life." Another speaker, Chris Bor gan told of the advantages of growing up in a small com munity like Heppner and urged seniors to never forget their roots. Pauline Winter honored Dr. Herbert Haywood Imel Herbert Haywood Imel, 73, lone, died May 27 in Heppner. A retired farmer, Mr. Imel was born April 18, 1906 at Oregon City. Services are Friday at two p.m. at the United Church of Christ in lone with Dr. Neal L. Chobot officiating. Carl and Betty Marquardt will sing sacred selections, "The Last Mile" and "In the Garden," with accompaniment by Betty Marquardt. Concluding services and interment will be at Highview Cemetery, lone. Mollahan named as honor students. The designation of Oregon scholars was given to the class's scholastic leaders, Bill Kenny and Scott McEwen. Receiving the Elks Scholar ship Awards were Scott Mc Ewen, first, Marie Yocom, first Lionel Wood, second, Bill Kenny, second and Jackie Mollahan, second. Connie Lee Hartley, Martin Fitzgerald, Nick Civarra and Kevin Imel. Sweeney Mortuary will be in charge of arrangements. He is survived by his wife. Myrtle, lone, a daughter, Minnie Civarra, Seattle, Charlie Smith Charlie Smith, 81, County Extension Agent in Morrow County from 1927-1934, passed away Saturday in Corvallis.
