SIX The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, May 24, 1979 Review:1 Spring concert entertaining with musical potpourri Senior Bill Kenny was named as recipient of the John Phillip Sousa Award and a special Bill Kenny Music Education Award; Wendy Myers was named by Ms. Mooberry as the best potential conductor, and Jojean Stevens received the honor of the National School Choir Award. The "most helpful" band award was awarded to Kath leen Van Schoiack, for her service as band secretary and arranger of the group's coast tour. In the most improved category were Darcy Holli- man, John Bier and Randy Cole. David Orr was named as most improved in the high school choir. Ackley's Zinger Awards included a key ring certificate to Kathleen Van Schoiack, Cindy Kerr won the spit ball award and the honor of gourmet chef was given to Jeff Fortenberry. Certificates were awarded to band members. Thursday night, the elementary and junior high musical students will hold their final school concert of the year. PUBLIC NOTICE PUBLIC NOTICE Noncz or budget aoxaa Heppner doesn't have a radio station but Thursday's night Spring Concert at Hep pner High School delivered live stereo of choral and band music. In a medley of well-selected music, the high school choir, under the direction of Kitty Mooberry, sang such lively tunes as "Up With People," Americana featuring "Shen andoah" and "Skip to My Lou My Darling", capping it off with "Ease On Down the Road" and enthusiastic, up beat number. The choir seem-, ed more at ease with the contemporary arrangement but overall turned in and 'above average performance. If that wasn't enough, the high school band directed by Jim Aekley offered a medley of traditional music entitled "Panorama U.S.A." with ex cellence in delivery, then retreated to the 1950's with a "Rock and Roll Review" featuring a 'Let's Go Yell' by Jeff Fortenberry. The concert advanced into the most contemporary music with the Jim Ackley Band performing "Lady, Three Times A Lady" and "Ebony Eyes" with the lead singer, Jim Ackley. It is becoming more common for musical teachers to display their talents along with their stu dents and Jim Ackley's voice deserves to be heard along with his student backup singer. Climaxing the concert was an Ackley arrangement to the themes from S.W.A.T. and Wonder Woman and the "Armeda Overture," a classi cal heavyweight which pre ceded the awards ceremony for the outstanding music students of Heppner High School.
