The Reas planted 20,000 strawberry plants in 1978 in three acres of ground and using the runners from the originals, planted 12 more acres this year. This summer, they are planning a U-picking arrangement for the first three acres. Adults will be able to visit the farm and pick their fresh berries at 35 cents per pound. However, in the future, the Reas may be exploring the possibility of marketing the berries to the East Coast by air express or shipping their crop to Vancouver, Washing ton. How did the Reas become involved in strawberry-growing? Jerald Rea says they were pursuaded to start the first crop in Morrow County by Dennis Reisch, an employee of the Stay ton Canneries. They purchased the starting Hood strawberry plants from Merv Ward of Olympia, Wash. As a sign of the increasing diversification of the nation's farmers, the Reas are cur rently raising wheat, alfalfa, potatoes and now branched off into mint and strawberries. The Reas ran an advertise ment in last week's edition of the Gazette-Times and re ceived a phone call at 7 a.m. from a person interested in taking part in the U-pick. To ensure the freshness of the berries, the Reas set the picking hours in the early morning and evening. When the Reas planted the first 20,000, they used a strawberry planting machine with women sitting in the rear seats and dropping the plants in the furrow. The rows planted were 40 inch in width. Despite last winter's freeze, the high wind in the Bombing Range Rd. area and the normal lack of moisture, the Reas and OSU Extension Agent, Harold Kerr, Heppner, expect a bumper crop this year. The plants, survived the freeze and the lack of moist ure was compensated by irrigation every other dav Times took the taste test and rate them good to excellent. Making the same test were two Spanish-speaking work ers, Salvino Arroyo and Luis Canteneda, who have been helping the Reas on the crop. The Hermiston area already has strawberry growers but as far as the Reas and Kerr know, this is the first straw berry production in Morrow County. Jerald Rea said he didn't like strawberries at one time four years must replace the original plants with new strawberries. worries were . f, astine strawberrv shortcake. v dav and some of w The Reag shou,d knQW ,n a ning Fri J Oduction tasi whether there is a ess maiu Gazette strawberries and in ,adv to PCK- rubber STAMPS Mode To Order At The Gazette-Times 676-9223 ft A HA ''I j .
