Jim Hackett assumed duties
of news editor of the Gazette
Times, formerly held by Rick
Steelhammer.
Hackett, a graduate of the
University of . Washington
School of Communications '
with a B.A. in editorial
journalism and history, has
had several years of experi
ence on Northwest dailies and
weeklies, covered the 1972
Sunshine Mine Fire, the
Northwest's major news story
in that year, while news editor
of a small daily, the North
Idaho Press, Wallace, Idaho
and two floods, the 1974 Placer
Creek flood and the 1975
Western Washington floods in
addition to community and
local government news.
A native , of Bremerton,
Washington, he has been a
member of the Elks, Chamber
of Commerce, Democratic
Boardman man dies in accident
A Boardman man, Steve G.
Myers, 37, died Monday even
ing in a freakish accident,
about 9:10 p.m. when the
pickup in which he was riding
collided with five horses on the
Kunze Rd., a mile south of
Boardman, according to Ore
gon State Police, Arlington
Division. , , ,
Myers vehicle was west
bound when the accident
occured and OSP reported an
ambulance crew from Board-
Eddie Thorpe
Eddie Thorpe, 75, Heppner,
died May 11 in . the Heppner
hospital of a heart attack.
He was born March 27, 1904
at Fargo, N.D., the son of
Emile A. and Gunilla Thorpe,
Mr. Thorpe was a retired
Charles Kirk
Charles Sylvester Kirk, a
former Heppner resident, died
in Hermiston on May 2 at the
age of 70.
He was born February 2,
1909 in Heppner, the son of
James and Mary Florin Kirk.
A retired auto mechanic, he
was an Army veteran of World
War II and a member of the
Hermiston American Legion.
Services were Saturday,
May 5 at 2 p.m. at the United
Methodist Church with the
Rev. Steve Tollefson officia
ting. Carl and Betty Mar
quardt sang "In the Sweet By
and By," and the "Old Rugged
Cross." -
Concluding services and
interment were held at Hep
pner Masonic Cemetery. Pall
Bearers were Howard Bryant,
Darrell Power, Gerald Rea,
Tom McElligott, Dick McElli
gott and James Miller.
He is survived by his wife,
Esther, Hermiston, three
daughters, Crystal Rathbun,
Sun Dance, Wyoming, Patri
cia wade, Hermiston, and
Beverly Sherman, Heppner; a
son, Clint Timmons, Gaston,
Oregon; a sister, Marie Gotch
ling, Portland, numerous
grandchildren and great
grandchildren. A daughter,
Sarah May Rhodes, preceded
him in death.

the Chief Seattle Council,
B.S.A., Bremerton. He also
enjoys horeshoe pitching,
bicycling, watching the Sonics
in the playoffs, wrestling in
high school and likes living in
the Northwest.
Sabre Farms founder dies
Charles Kyd, 64, founder of
Sabre Farms, Boardman, died
Monday at home. Kyd, a
director of the Port of Morrow
County was retired from the
presidency of Sabre Farms in
1977 and was working at the
time of his ; death as a
consultant on international
irrigation developments.
Born, May 28, 1914 in
Greenridge, Missouri, he
earned a B.S. degree in
man attempted to revive the
man without success. Three of
the horses were killed on an
impact and two badly injured
and humanely disposed y-of.
The owners of the property
from . where the horses es
caped fencing are John and
Christine Creason. The Crea
sons had leased the property
to a Mr. Harmon, Stanfidd
and Melvin Rachor.
Steve Gredell Myers, 37,
was born August 14, 1941 in

Red Cross
Swimming Lessons
The first session of Red Cross
Swim Lessons will be offered at the
Heppner Swim Pool July 10 through
July 21. The second and final session
will start July 24 and end August 4.
This year an adult swim class will
be offered which will be taught by
Red Cross standards. If you would
like to learn how to swim, classes
start July 10 at 6 p.m.
Red Cross Swimming Certificates
will be given to all passing students.
Basic Rescue and Water Safety
(Jr. Lifesaving) and . Advanced
Lifesaving (Sr. Lifesaving) will
start August 7 from 6 to 7 p.m. and
run about three weeks. This will be
offered once.
Ms. Diane Holland will be the pool
manager. Opening day free swim
will be Sunday, June 10.
Lesson hours, fees and registra
tion dates will be announced later.

sister, Mary Baker, Spring

Heppner Elks 358 will honor
the lodge's secretary for the
past 22 years this Saturday at
the club.
Glen Ward Day has been
proclaimed for Saturday, May
19 to honor the civic leader
and community service vol
unteer. A potluck dinner will
get underway at 6:30 p.m.
The public is encouraged to
attend.

Kyd Cattle Company at Three
Forks, Montana, 1956 to 1972.
In 1973, he founded Sabre
farms, one of the largest
irrigated farms in the North
west, developing raw sage
brush land and irrigating it
with Columbia River water.
During World War II, Kyd
served in the Pacific on the
battleship U.S.S. Washington.
He and his wife, Beverly, were
married in Boston, Mass. in
1946.
He was also a member of the
Economic Development Com
mittee of Oregon, the execu
tive board of the American

Garden Club plans clean-up
for MC Pioneer Picnic

County Pioneer Picnic is just
around the corner May 27
and the Heppner Garden Club
is trying to stimulate an effort
in getting the city park and
museum grounds prepared for
the annual event.
The Garden Club has sched
uled Monday, May 21 at 7 p.m.
