The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday April 12, 1979 FIVE HH thinclads take top individual honors at Condon Invitational Although a good portion of Heppner High School's track team was participating in a biology field trip to the Oregon Coast, the Mustang thinclads who stayed close to home during the weekend scored big points at the Condon Invita tional. Richard Schmidt jumped his way to the top of the standings among boys' indivi dual p'ointwinners an honor shared by Maureen Healy on the girls' side of the competition. Mustang Boosters to aid in home track meets Mustang Boosters met last Wednesday and the group decided to become active this spring by helping HHS Track Coach Dale Conklin with home meets. . Conklin will assign Booster members to different timing and records-keeping positions at the meets. Persons interest ed in helping should come to the meet at least one-half hour early. A weekly sports log. listing schedules, is published in late May. Tryouts, work-day are among week's Little League events Final tryouts for lone area Little League baseball players will be held this Saturday at 1 p.m. at the school athletic field. At the same time on Saturday in Heppner, a Little League workday will be held Van Marter ends Town Team race with 14-0 record ; playoffs begin Van Marter ended regular season play without a loss, two games ahead of the nearest challenger in Town Team Basketball League action. The final game of league play, held this past Sunday, saw Van Marter overpower Eckman 52-46, despite a 22-point scoring effort by Eckman's Jim Lankford. The win made Van Marter 14-0 for the season. Eckman finished the regu lar season in second place with a 12-2 record both losses suffered at the hands of Van Marter. Laverne Van Marter scored 19 points in Sunday's winning effort, followed by Ernie Ross with 12. In other action Sunday, Greenup beat Johnston 62-43. with Dan Coiner picking up 18 points and Mark Greenup 16 for the winners. A dozen teams, from Wah tonka to Culver, took part in the Condon meet, making the individual performances of each week in the Gazette Times. Booster members also de cided to have a sew-on patch designed for use with the Heppner Mustang jackets sold by the Lions Club last year. The jacket sales promotion has been turned over to the HHS band by the Lions. The next Mustang Booster meeting will be scheduled with the spring sports dessert at the Little League ball field at the fairgrounds. Chores will include painting, fence con struction and field repair. Final tryouts for Heppner Little League teams will be held April 21. In team scoring, the Hep pner boys tied for fourth with Umatilla, behind third place lone, second place Wahtonka and meet winner Joseph. Willow Creek Country Club Over the tee cup By Cindy Kerr Sunday men's play kicked off the 1979 Willow Creek Country Club golf season on April 1. Ron Bowman won the low gross honors and Robert Bier won the low net award. Don Lott and Harold Kerr tied for least putts. Lott also won the K.P. contest and Kerr won the long drive contest. The next event was Men's play, Sunday April 8. John Edmundson won low gross followed by John Shaw with second low gross. Jim Wishart won first low net followed by Harold Kerr with second low net. Doug Gunderson finished with the least amount of putts, taking that prize. Second least putts was won by Chuck Starks. Robb Rush was the long driver while Harold Kerr took the K.P. award. April 13 is the deadline for signing up for team men's play. You can sign up in the club house. Nix edged past Palmer to take first in the event in 4:38.5. Palmer was second with a LeadinS the Back time of 4:40 well ahead of the rest of the pack. Meet results " had not been compiled by Wednesday noon, but tentative results showed Heppner boys finishing first, with the Fillies taking second. Mustang golfers ace RHS, Enterprise to launch '19 season Heppner High School golfers got off to a strong start, winning both contests of the first week of action. Heppner goiters traveled to Boardman on April 4, where both the boys and the girls defeated Riverside. The score for the girls was Heppner 206 and Riverside 229. Cindy Kerr led that effort with a 9-hole score of 37, followed by Cindf Bergstrom with 50. Lottie Laughlin, 51. and Diane Sam ples with 68. Jeff Edmundson fired a 78 to lead the boys to a 339 to 348 win over Riverside. Don Lott shot a 79. Curt Day shot an 89 and Mike Lott scored a 93 to round oui the Mustang scoring. Robert Bier shot a 96 and Darrel Miles a 112 for Heppner's jayvees. Keeping on the winning note, the Mustangs won their second meet over Enterprise, 286 to 295. Ione's Robin LaRue garner ed two seconds to lead his team in total points. LaRue jumped six feet in the high jump, four inches below Hcppner's Richard Schmidt who took first, and ran a 16.0 in the 120 high hurdles. Terry Starr broke the school record in placing second with the discus at 128'6", and put the shot 40'1:;" for a third. The mile relay team of Treve Peterson, Jeff Hams, Robin LaRue and Gregg Rietmann took a third, while the team of Duane Fetsch. Peterson. Hams also took a fourth in the 880 yard run with a 2: 13 time. The only other placer for the boys was Mike Conklin in the 120 high hurdles with an 18.7 time and a sixth place. Overall the Cards scored 49 points. Although the girls under lone Coach Del LaRue didn't place as impressively as the boys LaRue said, "I was pleased with the way we did."
