Older 4-H members who are
planning to apply for state and
national awards are reminded
that right now is the time to be
getting their record books up
to date, as well as come by the
office and discuss the pro
gram with Birdine or John.
We have many outstanding

posters. Selection of posters to
go on to the national contest is
carried out during 4-H Sum
mer Week at O.S.U. in June.
This year, posters may
relate to one of two suggested
theme ideas or to an "open
category" which allows the
member to carry out their own
theme and ideas. The suggest
ed themes are "4-H-Reaching
Out", and "4-H There's
Something in it For You".
Posters may be done in any
medium, such as watercolor,
ink, crayon, charcoal or a
collage. They may be either
horizontal or vertical in com
position. Deadline to submit posters
to the extension office in
Heppner is April 1. All local
posters submitted for the
contest will be displayed
during county fair in the 4-H
building. All submitted will be
judged by an impartial com
mittee for the selection of five
to be sent to state level
competition.
The annual 4-H Horse Mem
bers Workshop will again be
offered this June for members
who have finished the 10th,
11th or 12th grades. The older
4-H members will have the
opportunity to register for this
event rather than attend the
traditional week of events at
OSU. The event is offered
simultaneously with Summer
Week, and those who attend
may travel with the group
attending Summer Week.
The Workshop is an in-depth
look at horses and their
management. Instructors for
the Workshop will come from
the OSU School of Veterinary
Medicine and departments of
animal science and crop
science. Attendance will be
limited to 80 members and 10
leaders at the state event.
Morrow County horse club
members in the older age
group are encouraged to come
by the extension office and
visit with John about the
Workshop. Registration forms
will be in the information
concerning Summer Week
activities which will be mailed
later this spring.
4-H members in our area, and
all are encouraged to partici
pate in the program by
completing "Project Sum
maries" which are submitted
to our state office. Morrow
County had two national trip
winners last year, and hope
fully, will have several appli
cants again this year.
Information will be mailed
members in the near future,
but in the meantime, come by
and get a head start.
COAST TRIP PLANS GET
SMALL REGISTRATION
We are in a quandry over
the planned trip to the coast
during spring vacation. Very
little response was received in
answer to letter of registration
sent out. Due date for a reply
was Feb. 15. If no more
interest is indicated, the trip
will be cancelled.
THINK SPRING
It must be on the way!
Under all that snow and mud
of floods there are living
things! A trip across country
to LaGrande allowed a look at
the country, and some wheat
fields are showing green,
already. In my yard I see
brave daffodil leaves and
other early spring things
peeking through, and it rein
forces my belief that there will
be spring this year! For those
interested in gardening or
landscaping, I hear that the
lone Garden Club will be
offering one of their "open"
educational meetings on
March 14. They will welcome
all who would attend.
