The varsity boys showed the Echo Cougars how to really play ball Friday night. The Cards outlasted the late fourth quarter surge by the Cougars to take the victory 56-51. Even though the Redbirds were out-heighted (Echo boasts of three players over six feet, while lone has none), they out-rebounded their opponents by three. "We just got our fast break going, got good checks, and played real well," said lone Coach Del LaRue. "We had a real team effort," he added, "everybody played good for us." Kevin McCabe scored 11 to lead the Cards victory, follow ed close by Robin LaRue with 10, Gregg Rietmann with 9, and Dan McElligott, 8. Terry Starr and John Lindstrom each added 4; Glen Krebs, 2; Shawn LaRue, 2. Larry Hole man of the Cougars led all scorers with 24. Saturday night, the Cards didn't fare as well. The game started out perfect, as the Cards barreled onto the floor and scored 18 first-quarter points, about the best they've done all year. But after that it looked like a totally different team. "The bottom dropped out of everything," said Coach LaRue. "We just stopped doing anything. We didn't rebound real well either," said the coach. Kevin McCabe was the only one who even reached double figures there, with 10. He was also the high point scorer with 16. Danny McElligott followed him with 8, all made in that run-and gun first quarter. Robin LaRue and Shawn LaRue both put in 4 points, Gregg Rietmann 2 and John Lindstrom one. Jim Bailey, for Arlington had 16 to lead his team. lone girls coach, Martha Doherty, said of their weekend play, that "Friday night we just weren't ready to play. Saturday we wanted to win. There was a lot of difference in the play." The girls dropped their league opener to Echo 21-39. Martha McElligott had 5 steals for the Cards, while Janet McElligott grabbed 9 caroms in the loss. By Janet McElligott "Their third quarter press just killed us," she said. "We really didn't know what to do." Michelle, LaRue and McElligott were the high scorers for the Redbirds with 6 each followed by Martha and Janet McElligott each with 5. Anita Palmer added 4 and Margaret Doherty 2. Stacey Snow led all scorers with 11. Lady Luck smiled at the Cards Saturday as they man aged to pull their 32-29 victory just in time, in a thrilling overtime contest against Arlington. Behind most of the game, the lone girls managed to come through in the final minutes of the ball game, holding the Honkers to no points in overtime, while scoring three themselves. "We did a lot better," said Coach Doherty. "I think that the critical point was in the turnovers. We had 19 to their 34. They outrebounded us, and are much taller, but they lost the ball too many times." Michelle LaRue led the lone scorers with 10 followed by Janet McElligott who had 9. Michelle McElligott had 5, Lori Edwards 4, and Martha McElligott and Tammy Holtz each with 2. Teresa Bailey, for Arlington had 18 rebounds and 11 points. The Cards play Umapine Friday, varsity boys only. The JV boys will play the River side JV, but the girls have a bye. Saturday night the teams all travel to Dufur. "We were close most of the ball game," said Coach Dale Holland, "but we just didn't get up enough shots. We were 19 for 43 for 44 per cent." Pilot Rock maintained a 44 per cent average also, but managed to get off 52 shots to make the winning difference. The Rockets pressed the frosh Mustangs the entire game, and played zone de fense as well. "We played poorly at times," confessed Coach Holland. But the game did have its bright points. "Dorian Forrar got 12 rebounds, 14 points and played very well, as did Bier," Holland noted. Following Forrar in scoring were Don Lott and John Murray, each with nine, Doug Holland with six, and Bier with four. Tom Corstens of Pilot Rock was the game's leading scorer with 28 points. The Pilot Rock contest was the first loss for the Heppner freshmen, who now have a 4-1 record. The meet Weston-Mc-Ewen today, and face Herm iston on Monday. even their season record at "It was a very sloppy game," said coach Jim Ackley. "Condon was very weak. We need a lot more work, and we need to under stand the offense. It would certainly help to know which kids want to play bad enough to stay eligible. The team attitude needs to become more mature. When our heads and our bodies get together, we should have a pretty good season," he said. High point earners for the Ponies were Mike Currin with 12; Greg Connors and Jeff Orr, each with six; Marty Britt, four; Andy Samples, three; Matt Barnes and Tom Huston, two each, and Jay Keithley with one. Heppner's seventh graders also handled the Demons easily, posting a 48-8 win. "I'm very pleased with the seventh grade team so far," comment ed Coach Mark Carnathan. "They have shown maturity and enthusiasm over the past few weeks. I'm pleased that , we won our last game, but if we had lost, I would have been just as pleased, due to our hustle. We ran our offense according to our philosophy, and that was the main reason we put so many points on the board. We showed our ability to play hard, pressing defense," Coach Carnathan said. High scorers for the seventh grade game were Eric Thompson with 12, and Greg Orr with 10. Other point scorers were Rod Cole and Dan Fortenberry each with six; Archie Lucas and Cord Adams, four each; Kevin Robarge, Mark Way and Kevin Kennison with two apiece.
