Mustangs clobber Umatilla , lose to
Condon in tourney action
The Heppner
GAZETTE-TIMES
Tight defensive play and
domination of the backboards
led the Heppner Mustangs to a
59-44 victory over Umatilla
during tournament action in
Condon Friday night.
But red-hot outside shooting
by the hosting Blue Devil team
on Saturday night resulted in a
66-60 defeat of Heppner, and
gave Condon the first place
trophy for' its own tourney.
The Mustangs controlled
Friday's game from start to
finish, with Jim Parker lead
ing Heppner in scoring with 17
points. Heppner tallied a
shooting success rate of 39 per
cent, connecting on 21 of 54
attempts. Mike Stookey put in
an excellant showing at the
backboards, in addition to
scoring 13 points for the
Mustangs.
Whistles sounded through
out the contest, with Heppner
picking up 17 fouls to 24 for
Umatilla. The Mustangs con
verted 51 per cent of their free ,
throws into points.
"It was a good game,",
commented Heppner Head
Coach Tom Day. "We played
good team defense and moved
the ball well on offense."
The game also allowed each
Heppner team member to
experience at least five
minutes of playing time.
In addition to Parker and
Stookey, Mustang point
scorers included Dale Holland
with nine; Darrell Bigelow,
seven; Lionel Wood, six;
Howard Huddleston, four;
Todd Sherer, two; and Bryan
Marlin, one.
In Saturday's game, Con
don, fresh from a 57-54 victory
over Cove on Friday night,
outgunned the Mustangs in the
opening minutes to pick up a
halftime lead of 13 points.
"They really came on
strong in the first part of the
game," commented Day.
"They just couldn't miss."
Blue Devil shooters logged a
success rate of nearly 60 per
cent in the first half, while the
Mustangs were held to only 18
per cent.
Once more, Heppner con
trolled the rebounding game,
bringing down 56 missed shots
to 27 for Condon. The Mus
tangs' six-foot-four Howard
Huddleston collected 17 re
bounds, Dale Holland was
credited with 13 and Bryan
Marlin got 7.
As a result, "we got more
shots, but we just couldn't get
them to drop," Day said.
Heppner scoring did im
prove substantially in the
second half, giving the Mus
tangs a success rate of 31 per
cent for the game, after being
limited to 18 per cent in the
first half. The Mustangs
moved to within three points ,
of Condon in the fourth
quarter, but a couple of free
throws and lay-ups were
botched. Heppner connected
on only 42 per cent of the
team's free throws.

Fillies
EL
oliday Tournament
The Heppner Fillies posted
wins over Gaston and Condon
to bring home the Condon
Holiday Tournament trophy
during basketball action in
Condon over the weekend.
During Friday night's game
against Gaston, the Fillies
were in control of the contest
from start to finish, out
rebounding, out-shooting, and
out-hustling the Portland area
team before scoring ended at
47-31.
Leading the Fillies' scoring
drive was Jackie Mollahan
with 16 points. Half of her
points were tallied in the third
quarter, mostly on fast-break
lay-ins made possible on
turnovers forced by herself
and her teammates. Wendy
Meyers also scored in double
figures, racking up 13 points
for Heppner.
Other Fillies scoring points
in the Gaston game were Geri
Grieb with six; Maureen
Healy, five; Mary Kincaid,

three; Alice Abrams, two, and
Kelley Hammons, two.
At least as important a
factor in Heppner's win was
the Fillies' control of the
backboards over a taller
Gaston club. The Fillies out
rebounded Gaston 35-19, with
Maureen Healy credited with
15. Wendy Meyers brought
down six rebounds and Mary
Kincaid latched onto five.
"The amount of hustling by
our girls was outstanding,"
said the Fillies' Coach Sheri
Brock. "Everybody played
exceptionally well, the
defense was good, and it was
one of the better offensive
games we've played."
Saturday's performance by
the Fillies against Condon was
not as picture-perfect as
Friday's outing, but it was
good enough for a win.
After a less than exceptional
first half, the Fillies' defense
turned downright ruthless,
allowing Condon only 14 shots
