SIX The Gazette-Times, Heppner, Oregon, Thursday, Oct. 19, 1978 Cardinal Club to hold fundraiser The lone parent teacher organization, Cardinal Club, has planned a fun packed event to help finan ce their budget for the year. A "Family Food and Craft Ho Down" will be held Dec. 10 with students and the community partic ipating in an afternoon of entertainment, food, craft sales and dancing. The event will begin at 5 p.m., the location to be announ ced later, with an evening meal of salads, tacos, chicken, hot dogs, desserts Bleacher Seats Cont. from page 5 One of the more important games of the season is coming up Friday night against Wahtonka, who are currently tied with the Mustangs for the league lead. Come on out to the. game and see the Mustans become alone at the top. The only place to be. 48-8. The lone Cardinals decided to do the steamroller bit against under-manned Wheeler. But they really try to roll up the score. The Cards went so far as to try and kick a field goal on a second-and-eight situation just to keep from scoring another TD. It is difficult to tell just how good the Cardinals really are. The Cardinal machine didn't start with their high performance people. ..they didn't have to. Jeff Hamms did quite well directing the lone team to a 21-0 lead before the Stefani and McCabe show saw any offensive action. The young men on the lone team definitely play a poised and confident brand of football, which they will need to carry them to the season finale at Arlington. While the kids from Wheeler High were beaten rather soundly by the Cardinals don't overlook the fact that they are a young football team that never quit trying. After some of the beatings the Wheeler team has taken this year the easy way would be to lay down. They don't. And talk about enthusiasm, Ronnie Bowman's sister dislocated her elbow being a cheerleader. And the players think they had it tough on the field. Around About Cont. from page 4 getting new occupants. Both the Palmers and Jim Rogers are well-known as food and drink purveyors here. I believe the Palmers will move to Bend, but I think Jim will just move into smaller quarters in Heppner. As hunting visitors decrease in numbers our area may seem more quiet, temporarily. Local football fever is building up as Heppner's Mustangs continue to overcome opponents. I know the girls' competition does not draw nearly the interest that the boys sports draw, but the girls who play regularly and so well deserve recognition, too. In just a month it will be table tennis that will dominate the sports scene here. Have you seen the clever tee shirts that are promoting Heppner as the table tennis capital of the world? Several outlets have them for sale. , One big annual event scheduled for this week is the Soroptimist Fall Rummage Sale. This year that sale is being held two evenings, tonight and tommorrow night from 5p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday morning from 8 a.m. until noon out at the County Fairground. The club members have worked hard at collecting and sorting and expect to offer many great bargains. I have really worked at using and helping to give away green tomatoes this fall. The plants froze more than a week before the hard, green fruit. I have never fried and baked so many green tomatoes before and they are really pretty edible. Hopefully I've mowed most of my lawn for the last time in 1978. 1 think that Inez Erwin was mowing her lawn, too, on Sunday. Now many of us can begin the late-fall chore of leaf removal. Such joy but those big trees are mighty nice during hot summer days I have to keep remembering. and beverage. The parents will be asked to donate food and craft items to be sold in booths along with crafts from the various school classes. The Cardinal Club is a supportive organization of the school and community. They sponsor a teacher reception in the fall to introduce teachers in the school, buy and sack Christmas candy given at the Christmas program, prepare a tea for the graduation ceremonies . Fillies top Riverside; maintain 7-3 record A Tuesday night victory over Riverside leaves the Heppner High Fillies with a 7-3 season record in league play, as the season nears its conclusion. Heppner's varsity defeated Riverside 15-1.3 and 15-11. with Wendy Myers and Jackie Mollohan each serving seven points during the contest. OSAA's delegate assembly will meet on Oct. 30, and the matter could be decided then. How ever. Sporseen indicated that he believed an OSAA decision would be made sometime this week, adding that since the State Department of Educa tion accepted the enrollment figure, Wahtonka was almost certain to qualify for Class A status. "Personally, I'd just as soon see them stay in the confer ence," said Sporseen "...for one thing, it means that if we win the three remaining games, we're the champions." A showdown between Wah tonka and Heppner for first place in the CBC will start Friday at 8 p.m. in Mustang Stadium. Heppner's other re maining games will be against Wasco County, with a 1-5 season record, and the power ful Condon Blue Devils, now tied for second place at 4-2. "A good, solid, no-mistake ballgame will beat Wahton ka," said Sporseen, adding that he was glad for the opportunity to meet Wahtonka head-on, rather than "waiting around for someone else to beat them." Not to be outdone the Cardinal end Robin LaRue seized a pass intended for a Falcon receiver and sprinted 42 yards to the goal. Stefani kicked the extra point, leaving the score at 48-8. lone rushed for 218 yards to Wheeler's 35. Card passing fared well with Stefani going B-for-fi and the Cards showing 8-12 overall for another 133 yards. Wheeler had a bad night with 7-24 passing with Ione's Treve Peterson starting off a rash of five Cardinal interceptions. "We'll have to look ahead to the next game," said Coach Meyers. "We have to take each game as it comes and not overlook anyone. Our next game will be tough. Away games are always harder, you're not playing on your own field." The game will be Friday at 7:30 p.m. when the Cardinals of lone take on the Echo Cougars in Echo. out in the win column, beatin Riverside 15-12 and 15-6. Heppner's C team won by a 15-13. 15-13 margin. Things did not go as well for the Fillies last week, when they lost to Condon on Thursday and met defeat at the hands of Wahtonka on Tuesday. Both matches were close, however, each requir ing three games. Heppner lost to Condon by a 14-16. 15-8. 3-15 margin, with Marie Yacom ending the match as Heppner's high point server with seven. During the road trip to Wahtonka. Heppner was de feated 8-15. 15-9. 9-15, with Geri Grieb serving the most points for the Fillies with 12. The Fillies are scheduled to play Sherman County today at 5p.m. at Moro, then meet lone on Tuesday for the final match of regular season league play. Heppner's Maureen Healy returns ball to Riverside High's side of the net during volleyball competition in Hep pner Tuesday night.
